BUDAPEST, Hungary – The New York Athletic Club went 1-2 in its Group B dual meets to place third in its pool at the Greco-Roman World Clubs Cup on Thursday.

The New York Athletic Club, which is representing the United States in the tournament, will advance to Friday’s competition and wrestle twice. They will open against the third-place team in Pool A, the Samson Club of Ukraine. The winner of that match will qualify for the ninth-place match, while the loser will be placed in the 11th place match.

The USA grabbed third place in the pool with a 4-4 criteria win over Ethnikos of Greece in the third round of dual meets. The USA won by scoring three wins by technical falls, and a fourth win by forfeit, accumulating 21 classification points to Greece’s 12.

The New York AC opened with a quick 10-0 technical fall by Sammie Jones at 59 kg/130 lbs. over Charis Agafanidis. Jones had two big four-point throws in the bout.

After a USA win by forfeit at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. by Austin Morrow, the USA made it three straight when Patrick Smith opened up his offense with a 9-0 technical fall at 71 kg/156 lbs. over Konstantinos Vasiliou. Smith followed a takedown with multiple gut wrenches to close out the victory.

Greece won its first match at 75 kg/165 lbs., but the USA clinched the win with another technical fall, as veteran Cheney Haight stopped Nikolaos Varkas, 8-0. A four-point arm throw was followed by two straight gut wrenches to close out the win for the USA. Greece won the final three matches, all by decisions in which the U.S. athlete scored. Greece did not pick up nearly enough classification points to secure the tiebreaker.

In the first two dual meets, the USA fell by identical 6-2 margins, starting with Hungary 2 and then Turkey. In both of the dual meets, the two U.S. winners were Smith and G’Angelo Hancock at 98 kg/215 lbs.

Against the Euro-Budapest Profile Team from Hungary, Smith edged Krisztian Jeger, 3-2, while Hancock stopped 2014 World University champion Ivan Nemeth, 2-1.

In the dual meet against Istanbul Buyuksehir Beldiyesi of Turkey, Smith shut out Aslan Cangiz, 2-0, while Hancock beat 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Cenk Ildem, 2-1.

Hancock was trailing 1-0 when Ildem was penalized for a caution and two points for an illegal strike against Hancock, which was awarded after the USA challenged the action. Hancock was able to keep strong position to win the match.

“We have a lot of young guys. We came over here to get matches and experience. Our goal was always to make it to day two. The guys stepped up in that third match. We were up against some really strong teams. Turkey had a solid team, and we beat a couple of guys against Turkey. I was happy about that. Hancock had a big win there. We are getting experience, finding out where we are weak and making adjustments,” said National Greco-Roman Coach Matt Lindland.

Smith ended the day with the best record among the USA team with a 3-0 record.

“It was great to get a week and a half training camp out here with the Hungarians. We got to see that European feel that we don’t get back at home in the United States. I worked on a few things with my game plan, trying to be more purposeful with my movement. It is starting to come together a little bit more,” said Smith.

Hancock went 2-0, before sitting out the Greece match when Daniel Miller competed for the USA. A Junior World bronze medalist last year, Hancock’s win over an Olympic medalist gives him more confidence at the Senior level.

“We had a plan. We watched the guys wrestle and followed the plan. I didn’t know who I was wrestling. I gave everything. I didn’t care who it was. I just went out there to get my things. The best thing I can do now is get Senior matches, and have these close matches so I know what it takes to win the tight ones. I have one more years of Juniors, then after that I am on the Senior level and I have to have these close matches so I know what the future holds,” said Hancock.

The semifinals will include all four Group winners, with Hungary 1 vs. Turkey, plus Iran 1 vs. Iran 2. These four teams will place in the top four of the tournament after two more matches tomorrow.

The Group runners-ups will battle, and after two bouts each, the teams will finish in places 5-8. Pool runners-up pairings for Friday morning are Armenia vs. Hungary 2 and Russia vs. Serbia.

Four teams will wrestle for places 9-12. These include the United States, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan and Belarus, all who were third in their pools.

The teams which finished fourth in their pools will not compete again.
