The 2015 Bill Farrell International will return to its roots, as it will be hosted at the New York Athletic Club in Manhattan in New York City on November 5-7.
Last year, the event changed its name from the New York Athletic Club International in honor of the late wrestling legend Bill Farrell. It was also hosted at Hofstra University on Long Island in Hempstead, N.Y. in 2014.
Top wrestlers from the United States and numerous other nations will compete in all three Olympic styles of the sport. It will be held in the sixth-floor gymnasium
This year, the tournament will change format to include the 18 Olympic weight classes only, six in each of the Olympic styles. These weight classes are:
Men’s Freestyle: 57 kg, 65 kg, 74 kg, 86 kg, 97 kg, 125 kg
Greco-Roman: 59 kg, 66 kg, 75 kg, 85 kg, 98 kg, 130 kg
Women’s Freestyle: 48 kg, 53 kg, 58 kg, 63 kg, 69 kg, 75 kg
It will also serve as a qualifying event in men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Iowa City, Iowa, April 9-10. The highest placed U.S. athlete in each weight class winning a medal who has yet to qualify will earn a spot in the Olympic Trials.
Currently, the Athlete Selection Procedures for the 2016 Olympic Games in women’s freestyle has not yet been approved. It is expected that when that process has been completed, the Bill Farrell International will also be an Olympic Trials qualifier in women’s freestyle.
Prize money will be provided in all three styles. Champions receive $1,000 (both U.S. and foreign athletes are eligible). Only U.S. athletes can receive prize money for second and third places, which is $500 and $250 respectively.
As an added bonus, a cash award for Outstanding Wrestlers in all three styles will be offered this year. The Greco-Roman Outstanding Wrestler Award will be named in honor of late Jacob Curby, a Greco-Roman Team USA member who unexpectedly passed away in 2010.
AN IMPORTANT DEADLINE is approaching for those seeking to join the hotel room blocks for the event. Those seeking to stay in an event hotel must book their rooms before October 1.
