KHASAVYURT, Russia - 2015 World Team member Zach Rey (Bethlehem, Pa./Lehigh Valley WC) won a silver medal at 125 kg/275 lbs., on the final day of the Intercontinental Cup on Sunday.

Rey was defeated in the finals by 2014 Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix silver medalist Anzor Khizriev of Russia, 1-5.

Rey opened with a win over Magamedkamil Huseyhov of Russia, 8-2, then edged American Bobby Telford (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC), 3-2. Telford was competing in his first major international tournament after earning three All-American honors for Iowa.

Rey won a criteria decision in the semifinals by 2012 Olympian and 2012 Asian champion Magomed Musaev of Kyrgyzstan, 1-1.

Telford wrestled back and reached a bronze-medal bout, falling to Musaev in a 1-1 criteria decision to place fifth.

“Zach Rey had a good tournament but came up a little short in finals. It was a tactical match and the Russian got a hard fought takedown putting Zach in position of having to get a late takedown to win, Zach pushed the pace but could not get the takedown he needed. The shot clock played a role in Zach’s and Bobby Telford's match but we never got the call. Bobby made several attempts late in his match but the wrestler from Kyrgyzstan was able to hold him off. It still comes down to getting the points needed to win when things are tilted towards the home mats,” said National Freestyle Coach Bruce Burnett.

Young star Aaron Pico (Whittier, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) placed a strong fifth at 70 kg/154 lbs.

Pico got on a roll early in the tournament, with three straight wins over Russian opponents. He opened with an 11-0 technical fall over Arsen Gusbanov, 11-0 then won a pair of high-scoring shootouts, beating Magomed Khizriev, 11-9 and Abulalibov Hamzayev, 13-9.

In the semifinals, he was edged in another high-scoring affair by Khasavjurt native Amir Berukov of Russia, 8-12. Berukov, a veteran with a number of international medals, was ninth in the 2009 European Championships for Russia.

Trailing in the bronze medal match, Pico scored three late points to tie the match, but lose by criteria to Azamat Omurzhanov of Kazakhstan, 4-4. Omurzhanov was fifth in the 2011 Asian Championships.

Pico has won a World medal for the United States on the age-group levels for three straight years, a 2013 Cadet World gold, a 2014 Junior World silver and a 2015 Junior World bronze.

“Aaron wrestled a great tournament losing two really close matches. Aaron came from behind in two of his matches and he did the same in the bronze medal match but could not get the winning takedown and ended up losing a 4-4 criteria match,” said Burnett.

In his first tournament moving up to 86 kg/189 lbs., Kyle Dake (Ithaca, N.Y./Titan Mercury WC/Finger Lakes WC) fell in the first round to 2011 Cadet World bronze medalist Azamat Dauletbek of Kazakhstan, 5-10.

Also competing on Sunday were Angel Escobedo (Ames, Iowa/New York AC) at 61 kg/134 lbs. and Chase Pami (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 70 kg/154 lbs., both who fell short of medal rounds.

Champions receive $2,500, runners-up $1,500 and bronze medalists $500.
