KHASAVJURT, Russia - Jimmy Kennedy (Ann Arbor, Mich./New York AC/Cliff Keen WC) won a silver at 65 kg/143 lbs. on the first day of the Intercontinental Cup on Saturday.

Kennedy lost a tight 5-5 criteria decision in the gold-medal finals to Alibeggadzi Emeev of Russia, who is a native of Khasavyurt.

Emeev has won numerous international medals, including silver medals at the 2014 Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix and the 2015 Ali Aliev Tournament in Russia, as well as the 2013 New York AC International in the USA.

Kennedy was a 2014 World Team member for the USA at 61 kg, and is currently No. 3 on the national team at his new weight class. He won the Intercontinental Cup in 2013, when he was named Outstanding Wrestler and received a new Lada Granta car.

Kennedy opened with a pin over Shihsaidov Jalilov of Russia, then beat 2011 World bronze medalist Dauren Zumagazy of Kazakhstan, 9-6 in the quarterfinals. He followed with a 9-5 win over 2012 Olympian Andrey Kviatkovski of Ukraine in the semifinals.

“Jimmy wrestled well today. He did a good job of wrestling hard in all his matches, start to finish. In the finals, he got behind 4-0 at the break off of a chest lock counter but worked his way back into the lead scoring five tough points in a pretty hostile environment. With around 25 seconds left, his opponent took a time out for “injury” and was able to get a push out in the last five seconds,” said National Freestyle Coach Bruce Burnett.

At 97 kg/213 lbs., Dustin Kilgore (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) placed fifth with a 2-2 record. He won his first two matches, stopping Aibek Shadov of Belarus by technical fall, 10-0, then beat Arby Visirhanov of Russia, 4-2. In the semifinals, Kilgore fell to Roman Bakirov of Azerbaijan, then lost in the bronze-medal bout to Tamerlane Rasuevym of Russia.

“Dustin got behind early in his medal match for third and fourth and was not able to make the comeback he needed. He was behind 6-0 when he pushed his opponent out of bounds, relaxed on the edge thinking he had the push out and gave up four points. Our protest was not upheld and the match was over,” said Burnett.

Five Americans competed on Saturday, with six more on Sunday.

“The USA athletes that competed today competed hard, but got behind early in their matches and had to try and claw their way back into the match. Sunday is a new day to get better,” said Burnett.

Champions receive $2,500, runners-up $1,500 and bronze medalists $500.
