Williams wins one match in Greco-Roman at CISM World Games; Final four pairings set for Saturday

MUNGYEONG, Korea – Three U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers competed on the first day of Greco-Roman at the 6th Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) World Games on Friday at the Mungyeong Indoor Gymnasium.


Three-time U.S. World Team member Sergeant Caylor Williams of the U.S. Army finished 1-1, reaching the quarterfinals at 98 kg/215 lbs.


He started with a wide-open 14-10 victory over African Championships silver medalist Hamza Haloui of Algeria. He dropped a tight to 2-3 match to Seyedmostafa Salehzadeh of Iran, who was a 2013 Asian Junior champion.


When Salehdazeh was defeated in the semifinals by 2013 World champion Nikita Melnikov of Russia, Williams was eliminated and not eligible for repechage.


The other two U.S. athletes competing on Friday lost their only matches, and were not eligible for repechage when their opponents failed to reach the finals.


At 71 kg/156 lbs., Private First Class Michael Hooker of the U.S. Army was edged by Przemyslaw Kraczkowski of Poland, 0-2


First Lieutenant Aaron Kalil of U.S. Marine Corps lost to 2012 Asian Junior bronze medalist Hyeong-Muk Choi of Korea in a 0-9 technical fall in his opening bout.


The final four U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers have weighed in and received their draws for Saturday, the final day of wrestling at the CISM Military World Games.


Two-time World bronze medalist Sergeant Justin Lester of the U.S. Army opens at 75 kg/165 lbs. against 2014 Junior World bronze medalist Ibrahim Ghanem of Egypt.


2015 Pan American Games champion Captain Jonathan Anderson of the U.S. Army faces two-time Asian Games silver medalist Se-Yeol Lee of host Korea in his first match at 85 kg/187 lbs. Anderson won a silver medal at the 2014 CISM Military World Championships.


Also competing Saturday are Sergeant Jamel Johnson of the U.S. Army at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Corporal Matthew Lamb of the U.S. Army at 130 kg/286 lbs.
