Mitchell drops two bouts at Dmitry Korkin International in Russia

YAKUTSK, Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Russia - Michael Mitchell (Bethesda, Md./New York AC) dropped a pair of matches at 65 kg/143 lbs. at the Dmitri Korkin International of freestyle wrestling on Saturday.


Mitchell opened with a 0-10 loss to Murad Nuhkadiev of Russia, who went on to win the gold medal at the weight class. Mitchell was pulled back into repechage when Nuhkadiev reached the finals, and lost to Sorbon Abdulhaev of Tajikistan.


The 8th Dmitry Korkin International tournament involved wrestlers from 25 countries. The prize fund of $64,000 U.S. included $3,000 for champions, $2,000 for silver medalists and $1,000 for bronze medalists. Prize money also went to coaches of the champions.


Included in the field were Olympic medalists Radoslav Velikov (Bulgaria) and Valery Andreytsev (Ukraine).


The winners of the first day were: Victor Rassadin (Russia, 57 kg), Murad Nuhkadiev (Russia, 65 kg), Innocentyi Innocentyev (Kyrgyzstan, 74 kg) and Valery Andreytsev (Ukraine, 97 kg).
