Titan Mercury squad receives pool draw for World Wrestling Clubs Cup in Iran

TEHRAN, Iran – The U.S. men’s freestyle team competing at the World Wrestling Clubs Cup in Iran has received its draw for pool play.
The U.S. squad, led by members of the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club, has been drawn into Pool D alongside competitor teams from Azerbaijan and Brazil. The Titan Mercury team finished as runners-up at the World Wrestling Clubs Cup last year.
The updated Titan Mercury roster includes seven Americans led by 2012 Olympic champion Jake Varner and two-time World Team member Tony Ramos. Joining the Titan Mercury squad are two highly touted Iranians, Morteza Ghiyasi at 65kg and Mojtaba Goleij at 86kg. Ghiyasi won the Iranian nationals two weeks ago and Goleij won the 2015 Junior World Championships.
Wrestling will begin at 9 a.m. local time (10:30 p.m. EST) in Tehran on Thursday.
In total, 15 teams are entered in the Wrestling World Clubs Cup.
Iran’s Bimeh Razi wrestling club is the defending champions and has been drawn into Pool A. Also in Pool A are teams from Latin America, Hungary and Mongolia.
Pool B consists of teams Bangladesh, Setaragan Sarr (Iran), Kepayati Mashhad (Iran) and Shahrdari Hamedan (Iran). Pool C features teams from Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Bulgaria and Georgia.
The winners of each pool will advance to the semifinal round that will be held on Friday morning. The winners of Pool A and Pool B will square off in one semifinal while the winners of Pool C and Pool D will wrestle in the other semifinal.
