Busy international month in November for Team USA in Europe and Asia

With the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Wrestling in Iowa City just five months away, the best international wrestlers from the United States will be very busy in competition and training during November.
Kicking off the month was the Bill Farrell International, held at the New York Athletic Club in New York, N.Y., Nov. 6-7. This event was included in the #Road2IowaCity Trials Qualifiers series, as 14 athletes earned a spot in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Iowa City. There were 11 U.S. champions in the tournament.
A group of U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers will compete in a pair of international events in Finland, the Vantaa Cup in Vantaa, Finland, Nov. 21 and the Arvo Haavisto Cup in Ilmajoki, Finland, Nov. 28. The trip will feature two-time Olympian Spenser Mango (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) at 59 kg/130 lbs. and 2012 Olympian Ellis Coleman (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Past World Team members on the tour include three-time World Team member Caylor Williams, Colorado Springs, Colo. (U.S. Army WCAP) at 98 kg/215 lbs. along with 2011 World Team member Cheney Haight (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 75 kg/165 lbs.
The Titan Mercury Wrestling Club will send a talented team of men’s freestyle wrestlers to compete for the second straight year at the World Wrestling Clubs Cup in Mazandaran, Iran. Last year, the Titan Mercury WC had a great performance at this event, placing second in the tournament with an impressive 4-1 record. Titan Mercury defeated teams from Azerbaijan, Syria, Iran and China to reach the finals, before falling to the powerful Bimeh Razi Jouybar club of Iran. The Titan Mercury WC roster has not yet been announced but will be posted when released.
A team with U.S. wrestlers in all three styles will compete at the UWW Golden Grand Prix Finals in Baku, Azerbaijan, Nov. 27-29. This is the final event of the annual UWW Golden Grand Prix series. Nations must qualify athletes through specific events to enter. Prize money includes $10,000 to champions, $5,000 to silver medalists and $2,000 for bronze medalists.

Four-time NCAA champion Logan Stieber (Columbus, Ohio (Titan Mercury WC/Ohio RTC) will wrestle at 65 kg/143 lbs.
A U.S. team with men’s and women’s freestyle wrestlers are scheduled to compete in the Henri Deglane Challenge in Nice, France, Nov. 27-28. The men’s freestyle team will feature 2004 Olympic silver medalist Stephen Abas (Sanger, Calif.) at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. , three-time World Team member Reece Humphrey (Columbus, Ohio/New York AC/Ohio RTC) at 65 kg/143 lbs. and 2014 World Team member Nick Marable (Morgantown, W.Va./Sunkist Kids/Mountaineer RTC) at 74 kg/163 lbs. Also competing are University World champion Tyler Caldwell (Stillwater, Okla./Sunkist Kids) at 86 kg/189 lbs. and Junior World champion Dom Bradley (Morgantown, W.Va./Sunkist Kids) at 125 kg/275 lbs.
The two U.S. women competing in France include 2008 World champion and 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Clarissa Chun (Morgantown, W.Va./Sunkist Kids) and two-time World Team member Jessica Medina (Champaign, Ill./Sunkist Kids), both competing at 48 kg/105.5 lbs.
There will be training camps for each of the Olympic styles during November, as well. A group of U.S. men’s freestyle athletes is training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., Nov. 8-14. The U.S. women’s freestyle national team will travel to Beijing, China, for training with top Chinese women athletes from Nov. 14-24.
The U.S. athletes competing in Greco-Roman at the UWW Golden Grand Prix Finals will leave earlier and have a training camp with top Azerbaijan athletes from November 8-15.
Please note that wrestlers who win medals in major international events in the upcoming months in women’s freestyle and in men’s Greco-Roman will qualify to compete at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Iowa City, Iowa, April 9-10. This is not part of the Olympic Trials qualifying process in men’s freestyle.
