King University, the two-time defending WCWA women’s college national champions, have retained the No. 1 team ranking on the women’s college scene for November.
Last month, King was ranked at No. 2 behind Campbellsville, which was second as a team at the 2015 WCWA Nationals. Both teams had 107 points in October, but Campbellsville got the No. 1 spot based upon more athletes in the rankings.
This month, King moved well ahead of the pack at No. 1 with 132 points, followed by Oklahoma City at No. 2 with 99 points. OCU moved up from No. 3 last month.
Simon Fraser comes in at No. 3, a jump from No. 5 last month. Rounding out the top five are the University of the Cumberlands at No. 4 and Campbellsville at No. 5.
In the individual rankings, only four athletes were able to retain their No. 1 ranking from October, Marina Doi of King at 101, Cody Pfau of Oklahoma City at 109, Hanna Grisewood of King at 123 and Kayla Miracle of Campbellsville at 130. Pfau and Miracle were 2015 WCWA national champions, while Doi and Grisewood were runners-up. Last month, Miracle was at No. 1 at 136 pounds, but has dropped in weight.
There are six new No. 1 ranked wrestlers in November, after a full month of competition on the women’s college scene. Among the new No. 1 wrestlers is a freshman, Jessika Rottier of the University of the Cumberlands at 155 pounds.
Also moving to No. 1 for the first time this year are redshirt senior Samantha Klingel of King at 116, sophomore Jessi Kee of King at 136, sophomore Mallory Velte of Simon Fraser at 143, sophomore Payten Smith of Simon Fraser at 170 and sophomore Jackie Williams of King at 191.
The 2016 WCWA Nationals will be held Feb. 12-13 at Oklahoma City University. Women’s college national titles have been held since 2004 and only five teams have won national team titles: Oklahoma City (4), University of the Cumberlands (3), Missouri Valley College (2), King University (2) and Simon Fraser (1).
