FLASH: NCAA champs Tomasello, Brewer win bouts at NWCA All-Star Classic in Atlanta

Returning NCAA champions Nathan Tomasello of Ohio State and Cody Brewer of Oklahoma won their bouts at the NWCA All-Star Classic in Atlanta on Sunday. This annual All-Star event is the annual kickoff of the new college wrestling season.
Tomasello scored a pair of takedowns and controlled the action in a 7-1 win over Zeke Moisey of West Virginia in a rematch of the 2015 NCAA finals at 125 pounds.
In a wild match with great wrestling by both wrestlers, Brewer scored a takedown in the closing seconds for an 11-10 win over Dean Heil of Oklahoma State at 141 pounds.
The event was conducted under experimental rules which featured three points for a takedown. The NWCA All-Star Classic was televised live nationally on ESPNU, with commentary from Tim Johnson and Jim Gibbons.
Scoring a takedown in overtime, Rossi Bruno of Michigan defeated Lehigh’s Mason Beckman, 4-1 at 133 pounds.
Winning the key scrambles, B.J. Clagon of Rider defeated Alexander Richardson of Old Dominion, 9-6 at 149 pounds.
In an overtime match, Mitch Minotti of Lehigh scored a pin on a stack in a defensive position without control over CodyPack of South Dakota State in 7:45 at 157 pounds.
At 165 pounds, NC State’s Max Rohskopf scored a key four-point turn in the second period and added a third-period takedown for a 9-2 win.
At 174, Zach Epperly of Virginia Tech edged Kyle Crutchmer of Oklahoma State, 2-1. A 1-1 tie was broken on a double stall call in the last 15 seconds left. It was Crutchmer’s second stall call, giving Epperly the winning point.
Scoring a takedown in sudden victory overtime, Blake Stauffer of Arizona State beat Nathaniel Brown of Lehigh, 4-1 at 184 pounds. Both athletes scored escapes in regulation.
At 197, Conner Hartmann of Duke controlled the match, beating Max Huntley of Michigan, 8-1. Hartmann scored takedowns in the first and second periods, and rode out Huntley in the third. He was Duke’s first winner in the history of the NWCA All-Star Classic.
In the closing match, Ty Walz of Virginia Tech defeated Adam Coon of Michigan at heavyweight, 9-3. A takedown to back points for five points in the first period was the key move by Walz that set the tone
The Outstanding Wrestlers were Cody Brewer and Blake Stauffer.
