IRVING, Texas – Four member of the 2014 U.S. UWW Junior World Team won gold medals and will return to the World Championships after strong performances at the Body Bar UWW Junior Nationals on Sunday.
Returning to the UWW Junior World Championships in Brazil in August are:
• 2014 Junior World bronze medalist Marina Doi of Titan Mercury WC at 44 kg
• 2014 Junior World bronze medalist Kayla Miracle of the Sunkist Kids at 59 kg
• 2013 and 2014 Junior World Team member Cody Pfau of Gator OKCU Women’s RTC at 48 kg
• 2014 Junior World Team member Becka Leathers of Gator OKCU Women/Men RTC at 55 kg
Leathers was named Outstanding Wrestler with a dominant performance, scoring two technical falls in the finals series over Areana Villaescusa of Rio Rico WC, 11-0, 11-0.
Doi reached the finals and drew her twin sister Regina Doi, and won both matches by forfeit.
Miracle, a 2015 WCWA women’s college national champion, stopped 2014 Junior National champion Maya Nelson of Sunkist Kids in the finals series, 9-0, 2-0.
Pfau won her finals series over 2013 and 2014 Cadet World Team member Sariyah Jones of STAR Wrestling, with a 24 second pin and a technical fall, 10-0.
2014 Junior Nationals champion Marizza Birrueta of Gator OKCU Women/Men RTC won the 51 kg title, defeating Amy Hou of Titan Mercury Wrestling Club in two straight matches, 14-5 and 15-5. Hou placed second in this event for the second straight year.
Two champions needed the full three matches to make their first U.S. World Team, Mallory Veltre of Simon Fraser at 63 kg and Rachel Watters of the Gator OKCU Women’s RTC at 72 kg.
Veltre lost the first match to 2014 Junior World Team member Alexis Porter of McKendree Univ, by pin. She rallied with two straight wins, 3-3 and 6-4.
Watters also lost the first match, losing to Katerina Lobsinger of Combat Sports Academy/ Battle, 9-11. She rebounded with tight 8-4 and 12-11 victories.
Forrest Molinari of King Univ. earned the spot at 67 kg beating Skylar Grote of Blair Academy 5-1 and by pin in 4:11.
In the non-World Championship weight class, Clarc Walker of the Univ. of the Cumberlands pinned Destane Garrick of Nieves Wrestling) in 4:29 at 79.5 pounds.
