Men’s freestyle champions determined at “Last Chance” Trials qualifier, the Northern Plains Regionals

WATERLOO, Iowa - Eight men’s freestyle champions were crowned in the Last Chance World Team Trials Qualifier, the Northern Plains Senior Regionals, on Saturday.
Winners earned a spot in their weight class at the 2015 U.S. World Team Trials in Madison, Wis., June 13-14.
The top five finishers at the 2015 U.S. Open in Las Vegas, Nev. last week qualified for the Madison. Based upon the results in Las Vegas, there were numerous highly-respected athletes who had not qualified yet for Madison who chose to compete in Waterloo.
Earning spots in the World Team Trials with victories were:
• Frank Perrelli, Stillwater, Okla. (Titan Mercury WC) at 57 kg/125.5 lbs.
• Tyler Graff, Dublin Ohio (NYAC) at 61 kg/134 lbs.
• Jason Chamberlain, Lincoln, Neb. (Titan Mercury WC/Nebraska Wrestling TC) at 65 kg/143 lbs.
• Adam Hall, Raleigh, N.C. (Titan Mercury WC) at 70 kg/154 lbs.
• Quinton Godley, Raleigh, N.C. (Titan Mercury WC) at 74 kg/163 lbs.
• Phil Keddy, Iowa City, Iowa. (Titan Mercury WC) at 86 kg/189 lbs.
• Micah Burak, Colorado Springs, Colo. (Titan Mercury WC/OTC)
• Tyrell Fortune, Tempe, Ariz. (Titan Mercury WC) at 120 kg
Burak, a past Univ. of Pennsylvania All-American and USOTC resident, won one of the toughest weights. In the finals, he defeated 2014 U.S. Open runner-up Wynn Michalak of Titan Mercury WC, 6-4. His semifinals win was over past NCAA champion and 2014 World Team Trials runner-up Dustin Kilgore of the Sunkist Kids, 6-4.
Perrelli, who was a star at Cornell and a past U.S. Open runner-up, scored a 16-5 technical fall over Dan Mitcheff of the NYAC in the finals. Perrelli also beat 2014 Pan American Championships champion and former Minnesota star Zach Sanders in the semifinals, 4-4 by criteria.
Keddy, the former Iowa star, stopped former UNI star Ryan Loder of the Panther WC in the finals with a 12-1 technical fall at 86 kg/189 lbs.
One of the loaded weight classes included 66 kg, won by former Boise State star Jason Chamberlain, a 2015 Pan American Championships gold medalist. Chamberlain dominated North Carolina star Evan Henderson of the North Carolina RTC in the finals, 10-0.
Graff, an NCAA runner-up at Wisconsin, and winner of the Dave Schultz Memorial this year, stopped former Old Dominion star Kyle Hutter of Titan Mercury WC, in a 12-2 technical fall in the finals.
There will be no World Team Trials qualifier at 125 kg/275 lbs., which was won by Fortune, who was fifth at the U.S. Open and already had qualified. He defeated two-time NCAA champion Tony Nelson of the Minnesota Storm, 10-2 in the finals. Fortune also beat two-time NAIA national champion Matt Meuleners of the Minnesota Storm in the semifinals. Taking third in the weight was three-time NAIA national champion Eric Thompson of the Nittany Lion WC>
Now that all of the qualifiers have been held, there is only one wildcard spots available in each weight class for the World Team Trials. The wildcard application deadline is May 20, and the athletes selected will be announced on May 22.
The Senior and Junior Greco-Roman divisions were held on Friday. There was a change in the World Team Trials process for the U.S. Senior Greco-Roman team this year, as only the U.S. Open finalists move on to the World Team Trials in Ithaca, N.Y. Therefore, this year’s Senior Greco-Roman event was not a Trials qualifier.
