The Pan American Junior champions, Team USA women’s freestylers, pose together after their victory.
HAVANA, Cuba – The United States had four individual champions and two silver medalists to claim the team title at the Pan American Junior Championships in women’s freestyle on Thursday.
Individual champions were Cody Pfau of Colorado at 48 kg, Becka Leathers of Oklahoma at 55 kg, Alexis Porter of New York at 63 kg and Skylar Grote at 67 kg.
“All of the girls scored team points. Each girl won one or more matches to help our four gold medals and two silvers take the team victory. Seven of our eight girls won their first round match. They all helped each other be ready. stay hydrated and mentally focused,” said U.S. coach Danny Struck.
Silver medals went to Amy Hou of Georgia at 51 kg and Kayla Miracle of Kentucky at 59 kg.
“Kayla lost by a last second score to Mexico, the same girl that took home the outstanding wrestler for the tourney. The winner of that exciting match was sure to be the OW. Kayla and Amy both handled themselves as true champions in defeat,” said Struck.
Regina Doi of California at 44 kg won a bronze medal, and Destane Garrick of New York placed fourth at 72 kg.
