ULAAN BATAAR, Mongolia – The United States won four medals, including two individual gold medals, on the final day of the Mongolian Open in women’s freestyle.
Champions included two-time World medalist Helen Maroulis (Rockville, Md./Sunkist Kids) at 58 kg/128 lbs. and 2014 U.S. Open champion Jackie Cataline (Alhambra, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) at 75 kg/165 lbs.
Maroulis, competing up a weight class, won three matches, defeating Shoovdor of Mongolia in the finals, 5-4.
Cataline also won three matches, including a pin of Chantsalnyamaa of Mongolia in the finals.
Other individual medalists for the USA were silver medalist Katherine Fulp- Allen, Colorado Springs, Colo. (New York AC) at 53 kg/116.5 lbs. and bronze medalist Erin Clodgo (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.
Fulp-Allen won three straight matches to reach the finals, where she fell to Otgontsetseg of Mongolia, 0-6.
After an opening loss, Clodgo won her bronze medal match over Tserenchimed of Mongolia, 11-9.
Helen Maroulis and Erin Clodgo had great medal matches! They found themselves in situations where they had to find a way to win. Learning how to win the ugly matches are just as important as any technique or conditioning. We have to know how to find wins, today we did a great job of COMPETING! We have things to learn and work on absolutely but we have to COMPETE to WIN. I'm proud of what was accomplished today,” said National Women’s Coach Terry Steiner.
Adding in the four medals won by Team USA on Saturday, the United States claimed eight medals at the Mongolian Open during the weekend.
