ISTANBUL, Turkey – 2014 U.S. World Team member Jimmy Kennedy (Ann Arbor, Mich./New York AC/Cliff Keen WC) at 65 kg/143 lbs. at the Yasar Dogu International on Saturday.
Kennedy, who made the World Team at 61 kg last year and has moved up in weight, won his first two matches by technical fall, beating American Evan Henderson and Ilyas Zhumay of Kazakhstan. In his third match, he was beaten by Bulgaria’s Boris Novachkov, 3-6. Novachkov grew up in California and was an All-American for Cal Poly.
When Novachkov defeated 2014 World champion Soslan Ramonov of Russia to reach the finals, Kennedy was pulled back into the repechage. He won his first match with a technical fall over a Moldovan. In the bronze-medal match, he received a forfeit from Ramonov.
Kennedy was a star at the Univ. of Illinois, and now trains at the Regional Training Center at the Univ. of Michigan
Two Americans placed fifth in their weight classes, David Taylor (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Wynn Michalak (Champaign, Ill./Titan Mercury WC/Illinois RTC) at 97 kg/213 lbs.
Taylor started the tournament on fire, winning three straight dominant matches. He scored a 10-0 technical fall over Marad Zoidze of Georgia, then pinned Coskun Ender of Turkey. In the quarterfinals, he got another tech fall, this time over Ibrahim Taymouri of Iran.
In the semifinals, he met three-time World champion Denis Tsargush of Russia, and dropped a 0-10 bout. In the bronze-medal match, he drew the 2014 World champion at 70 kg, Khetik Tsabalov of Russia, and lost 1-9.
Taylor was a two-time NCAA champion and four-time finalist for Penn State. He was second in the 2014 U.S. World Team Trials.
Michalak opened with a win over American Micah Burak, 7-3, then was beaten by 2014 World champion Abdulsalam Gadisov of Russia, 0-10. When Gadisov reached the finals, he was eligible for repechage.
He won a forfeit in his first repechage match, then pinned Turkey’s Muren Mutlu to qualify for a bronze-medal bout, where he fell to Radoslaw Baran of Poland, 3-8.
“It was tough. I felt we left a lot of wins out there, matches we were winning and let slip out of our hands. A little bit of inexperience for some of the younger guys. Some of them got ‘out-freestyled” in positions they were not as technically sound as they should. It is a tough tournament. 65kg had three World champions, and Russia brought their No. 1 team,” said U.S. coach Jamill Kelly.
Special thanks to Coach Jamill Kelly for his regular Twitter updates, as well as team leader Del Hawkins for his updates. More updated information will be posted when received.
The U.S. draws for Sunday’s competition are below. There are 10 USA entries including 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Coleman Scott at 61 kg, who draws two-time World champion Viktor Lebedev of Russia in the first round.
