ST. PETERSBURG, Russia – The United States lost to Mongolia, 3-5, in the third place match, to finish fourth at the Women’s World Cup on Sunday.

Team USA finished the weekend with a 2-2 record. On Saturday, the USA finished second in Group A with a 2-1 record, with wins over Azerbaijan and Poland and a loss to Japan.

The final dual started with a win for the USA at 48 kg. Two-time World medalist Alyssa Lampe fell behind early to Erdensukh Narangerel by an 8-2 margin. She had a furious comeback, scoring the next seven points including a score on the final buzzer for an exciting 9-8 comeback win.

Mongolia countered at 53 kg with a pin from Sumiya Erdenchimeg over two-time World Team member Whitney Conder. It was Conder who led 2-0 in the second period. She was placed on the shot clock. Sumiya locked up a cradle for a takedown and drove her over, securing the fall with less than a minute to go.

Winning her fourth match of the weekend was two-time World medalist Helen Maroulis, who edged Sundev Byambatseren, 2-1 at 55 kg. Maroulis scored a first-period takedown, the key technique to the victory.

Mongolia powered back at 58 kg, as Baatarjev Shoovdor scored a 10-0 technical fall over two-time World Team member Alli Ragan. Baatarjav scored three takedowns in the first period, then hit a four-point takedown for the winning technique early in the second.

2014 World champion Sukhee Tserenchimed of Mongolia added another technical fall, stopping Kelsey Campbell 12-1 in the second period at 60 kg. Sukhee scored multiple ankle lace turns for exposure

Soronzonbold Battsetseg added a pin for Mongolia at 63 kg, putting away Erin Clodgo at the 4:57 mark. Soronzobold opened a big lead with takedowns and turns, and when Clodgo attempted an arm throw, she was countered and put on her back for the fall.

The dual was clinched for Mongolia at 69 kg, when Ochirbat Nasanburmaa stopped four-time World medalist Elena Pirozhokova, 8-5. Ochirbat scored a pair of four-point takedowns in the first period. Pirozhkova added a four-pointer of her own, but could not close the gap.

Two-time World champion Adeline Gray closed out a strong weekend with a 10-0 technical fall at 75 kg over Gelegjamts Naranchimeg, with a takedown and multiple ankle laces.

Japan won the first five matches to clinch the team title, eventually earning a 5-3 win over host Russia in the championship dual meet. In the fifth-place match, Azerbaijan and Ukraine split their bouts, finishing at 4-4, but Azerbaijan won the tiebreaker by scoring the most classification points, 16-15. For seventh place, Poland won four of the last five bouts to defeat Sweden, 5-3.
