MINSK, Belarus - Jordan Burroughs (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) returned to the mat with a vengeance.
Competing for the first time since his bronze-medal performance at the 2014 World Championships, Burroughs won a 43-man freestyle bracket at 74 kg/163 lbs. at the Alexander Medved International on Friday.
Burroughs defeated 2013 World fifth-place finisher Jacob Markashvili of Georgia by a 12-1 technical fall in the finals.
Burroughs rallied from a 5-2 deficit to down 2013 World bronze medalist Ali Shabanou of Belarus 8-6 in a wild semifinal.
Burroughs, an Olympic gold medalist and two-time World champion, is now 98-2 in his remarkable international career.
“Jordan Burroughs outlasted six foes in a very tough field to win the gold. Jordan continues to face challenges impressively. He's motivated to improve and it shows everyday," said Assistant National Coach Bill Zadick.
Frank Perrelli (Stillwater, Okla./Titan Mercury WC) had an impressive 3-2 record in a loaded field to place fifth at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. He fell in the bronze-medal match, to Bekhbayar of Mongolia, 1-10.
“We had an opportunity to wrestle for two medals. Frank Perrelli placing fifth at 57 kg wrestled well. He will focus on a few areas and improve to really open up offensive opportunities,” said Zadick.
Nine Americans competed on Friday.
"The 2015 Medved is a very strong field of wrestlers. Competition at this level is as close to the World Championships as it gets. As such, these tough competitors will expose your weaknesses. We are learning that we have plenty of room to improve both in victories and defeats,” said Zadick
Another group of U.S. wrestlers will compete on Saturday.
