MADISON, Wis. – Joe Colon is a point-scoring machine.
Just ask his shell-shocked opponents.
Colon earned wild back-to-back comeback wins of 17-12 over Matt McDonough and 11-8 over Angel Escobedo to storm into the finals of the U.S. World Team Trials on Saturday at the Alliant Energy Center.
“You’ve got to keep going and keep putting up points, no matter what the score is,” Colon said. “I just had to keep building back. You just have to keep believing in yourself. No matter what the scenario is, you’ve got to keep wrestling all the way through.”
Colon was one point from being teched before rallying for an improbable 10-1 deficit against McDonough. Colon was down 4-1 in the win against Escobedo in the Challenge Tournament finals.
Colon will now battle U.S. Open champion Tony Ramos in the best-of-3 freestyle finals
Ramos, a 2014 World Team member, rallied to beat Colon 6-4 in the U.S. Open semifinals. Colon scored a combined 36 points in three matches to win the Challenge Tournament at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. on Saturday.
“I’m just ready to go,” Colon said. “I came in here thinking I’ve got five matches, and now I have two to go. I just have to stay on the gas pedal and put up more points than he does.”
Champions at the Trials advance to September’s World Championships in Las Vegas.
The best-of-3 finals are set for 5 p.m. and will be shown on a live webcast on Flo Wrestling.
2014 World Team member Ed Ruth stormed into the best-of-3 finals with a 13-2 technical fall over 2013 World Team member Keith Gavin in the Challenge finals at 86 kg/189 lbs.
Ruth will face U.S. Open champion Jake Herbert for the World Team spot. Herbert, a 2009 World silver medalist, beat Ruth 13-11 in the U.S. Open semifinals.
Veteran Zach Rey held off past Junior World champion Dom Bradley to reach the final-round series against U.S. Open champion Tervel Dlagnev.
Dlagnev is a two-time World bronze medalist.
2009 World Team member Dustin Schlatter and 2014 University World silver medalist James Green will meet in the finals at 70 kg/154 lbs. Green was second at the 2014 World Team Trials.
U.S. Open champion Nick Marable did not weigh in for the Trials at 70 kilos.
Marable has applied for a medical extension, in accordance with USA Wrestling World Team Trials procedures, in hopes of wrestling the Trials winner at a later date for a spot on the World Team. The Men’s Freestyle Sport Committee will hear that appeal and make a ruling on Marable’s fate.
