The top Olympic-caliber wrestlers in the United States will be on display at the 2015 U.S. World Team Trials in men’s and women’s freestyle, June 12-14 at the Coliseum at Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wis., June 13-14.

The U.S. World Team Trials will determine the U.S. World Team in both the men’s and women’s freestyle for the 2015 Senior World Wrestling Championships at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Sept. 7-12. There are 16 spots on the USA team up for grabs in Madison, eight in men’s freestyle and eight in women’s freestyle.

Among the top wrestlers qualified for the event are Olympic champions Jordan Burroughs and Jake Varner, Olympic/World medalists Clarissa Chun, Coleman Scott, Randi Miller, Jake Herbert and Tervel Dlagnev plus World champions Adeline Gray, Elena Pirozhkova and Iris Smith.

Burroughs has won an Olympic gold, two World golds and a World bronze. Chun is a World champion and Olympic bronze medalist. Gray and Pirozhkova have won four career World medals. Varner boasts an Olympic gold and a World bronze medal. Dlagnev is a two-time World bronze medalist.

Except in two weight classes, the champions from the U.S. Open, held in Las Vegas, Nev., May 8-9, will advance to the best-of-three Championship Series in their weight class in the evening 5:00 p.m. session. In men’s freestyle, 2014 World bronze medalists Jordan Burroughs at 74 kg and Tervel Dlagnev at 125 kg qualified for the Championship Series based upon their World medals.

The rest of the qualifiers for the World Team Trials will compete in the Challenge Tournament at their weight class in the 10:00 a.m. morning session. Only the winner of the Challenge Tournament will advance to compete in the best-of-three series against the top ranked athlete.

In addition to the top stars from across the nation, there are some talented qualifiers with a strong local angle. Included are two stars from the Wisconsin Regional Training Center who train in Madison, Nazar Kulchytskyy at 70 kg, who was a three-time NCAA Div. III champion for UW-Oshkosh, and Connor Medbery at 125 kg, who was fourth in the 2015 NCAA Div. I Championships for the Univ. of Wisconsin. Two prominent past stars from Wisconsin are also in the field, NCAA champion Andrew Howe at 74 kg and NCAA runner-up Tyler Graff at 57 kg. Among the Wisconsin natives in the field is two-time World bronze medalist Alyssa Lampe at 48 kg, who was a state runner-up for Tomahawk High School.

Also included in the weekend is the UWW Junior World Team Trials in men’s freestyle, held at the Coliseum at Alliant Energy Center on Friday, June 11. The event features athletes in the UWW Junior age division (17-20 years old), some of the best wrestling talent from the collegiate and high school levels.

The results of the UWW Junior World Team Trials will determine the men’s freestyle teams competing in the Junior World Championships in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, August 11-16.

There are three Univ. of Wisconsin wrestlers who have qualified for the UWW Junior World Team Trials, Jens Lantz (63 kg), Andrew Crone (66 kg) and Ricky Robertson (84 kg).

The United States placed second as a team at the 2014 UWW Junior World Championships. All three of the 2014 Junior World medalists are eligible to try out for the team again, silver medalist Joey McKenna (60 kg), silver medalist Aaron Pico (66 kg) and bronze medalist Kyle Snyder (96 kg).

The Wisconsin Regional Training Center is working with the Wisconsin Wrestling Coaches Association, Wisconsin Wrestling Federation and the Madison Area Sports Commission as local organizers for the event. This is the second straight year which the event has been hosted in Madison.
