COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Victoria Anthony powered her way to a championship at the Dave Schultz Memorial International.
The explosive Anthony capped her run through a loaded weight class with a dominant 8-0 win over World champion Clarissa Chun in the finals on Saturday afternoon at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.
Anthony, a semifinalist at the 2013 World Championships, scored two first-period takedowns and added a four-point throw on a second-period counter en route to the impressive win at 48 kg/105.5 lbs.
Anthony was named Outstanding Wrestler.
“I am being really methodical in my positioning and in my attack after her shots,” Anthony said. “I am keeping the pressure on, which coach Valentin Kalika has us do. He is an awesome coach.”
Anthony was one of seven American champions crowned in women’s freestyle as the three-day Dave Schultz event concluded on Saturday.
World medalist Elena Pirozhkova scored an early takedown en route to downing two-time Schultz champion and 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Randi Miller in the finals at 69 kg/152 lbs. Pirozhkova won her fourth Schultz title.
The match ended 2-2, but Pirozhkova won by virtue of her takedown as the highest scoring move. Miller beat Pirozhkova 2-1 in the 2014 Schultz finals.
“I fill this weight class out a little better this year,” said Pirozhkova, who was competing up a weight class. “My strength training was a little different, so I felt stronger this time around. It’s also all the things I have been working on in practice.
“I am playing around with the idea now (of going 69 kg). I have to make a decision in the next couple of months. I am testing how I feel here. Randi will be an opponent at this weight, so this tournament is a step in the right direction.”
Two-time World medalist Helen Maroulis used a pair of second-period pushouts to rally past top young prospect Sarah Hildebrandt 3-2 in the finals at 55 kg/121 lbs. Maroulis won her third straight Schultz title.
Maroulis had just returned to practice from an injury earlier in the week.
“I did like one or two light practices. I didn’t really think I was going to wrestle,” Maroulis said. “On Thursday, sports medicine said they’d make the final decision. They said if I wanted to do it, go ahead. I said, ‘let’s do it.’ Thursday night, I was cutting weight and I said, ‘What? I forgot about this part.’ But it was good.
“I knew I was going to be extremely out of shape. I wanted to focus on the moves I have been working on with Coach Valentin. I didn’t wrestle like myself in the finals. I adjusted my style. I was more defensive. It was good, because I got to work some upper body. I came here and that was the goal. It wasn’t as pretty as I wanted it to be, but I accomplished a lot of things out there.”
Two-time World Teamer Leigh Jaynes-Provisor came out strong en route to a first-period fall over three-time Schultz champ and two-time World medalist Sally Roberts in the finals at 60 kg/132 lbs.
Two-time World Team member Whitney Conder downed Haley Augello by an 11-0 technical fall in the finals at 53 kg/116.5 lbs. Conder led 7-0 after the first period.
Two-time World Team member Alli Ragan looked dominant in a 10-0 technical fall win over Bulgaria’s Mimi Hristova in the title bout at 58 kg/128 lbs.
Erin Clodgo struck quickly to gain a first-period fall over Kayla Aggio in the finals at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.
Canada’s Justina DiStasio downed two-time Schultz champion and 2005 World champion Iris Smith 6-0 in the finals at 75 kg/165 lbs.
The Sunkist Kids and the New York AC were co-champions in the women’s team race.
This is the final day of the three-day Schultz event, which started in 1999. The tournament honors the legendary Dave Schultz, an Olympic and World champion who was a seven-time World medalist for the United States.
