Keddy places fifth on final day of Yarygin Grand Prix in Russia

KRASNOYARSK, Russia - Phillip Keddy (Iowa City, Iowa/Titan Mercury WC/Hawkeye WC) had a strong showing to place fifth at 86 kg/189 lbs. on the final day of the Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix on Sunday. This is considered one of the toughest tournaments in the world each year.
Keddy finished with a 3-2 record, dropping his bronze-medal match to Dauren Kurugliyev of Russia, 0-9. The past University of Iowa star had quality wins over some top international competitors.
He opened with a tight 9-8 win over Shinja Matsumoto of Japan. In the second round, he lost to eventual champion and 2012 Olympian Anzor Urishev of Russia, 0-9. Urishev went on to win his second Yarygin title.
When Urishev reached the finals, Keddy was pulled back into repechage. He won two straight matches in repechage to reach the medal rounds, scoring a 10-0 tech fall over Bat-Erdene Bayasgalan of Mongolia, then edging 2010 World bronze medals Soslan Ktsoev of Russia, 5-4.
“Phil Keddy wrestled five matches and fought his way into the bronze medal match. He did some great things and had good wins, especially against Ktsoev, the 2010 World bronze medalist. He is building consistency in positions and executing skills where he is successful,” said Assistant National Freestyle Coach Bill Zadick.
2009 World silver medalist and 2012 Olympian Jake Herbert (Ann Arbor, Mich./NYAC/Cliff Keen WC) finished with a 1-1 record at 86 kg/189 lbs. The former NCAA champion from Northwestern was competing in only his second tourmament since wrestling in the 2012 London Games.
He opened with an 8-4 win over tough Aslan Kakhidze of Kazakhstan, who was fifth in the 2014 World Championships. He dropped a 10-0 bout to 2010 World bronze medalist Soslan Ktsoev of Russia, and was eliminated when Kstoev fell short of the finals.
“Jake is testing himself at the best tournament in the world. It’s trial-by-fire is challenging but he maintains a good attitude and approach combined with a desire to accomplish great things,” said Herbert.
The U.S. had a stronger team effort than in a number of previous years, with silver medals coming from Brent Metcalf (Iowa City, Iowa/NYAC/Hawkeye WC) at 65 kg/143 lbs. and Andrew Howe (Norman, Okla./New York AC) at 74 kg/163 lbs. and three athletes in a medal match.
“Every time we step on the mat is an opportunity to grow and learn. At a competition such as the Yarygin, the amount of information to process is great and we will take home the video, study and, learn all that we can. I believe Team USA can come to this event and win gold medals. It will be challenging but it will be done. Brent and Andrew are chomping at the bit to own these gold medals! They know that we can win the best tournaments in the world –here and everywhere- and I know the U.S. team can be the best when we put our full focus on daily improvement," said Zadick.
