Ramos, McDonough, Howe receive Yarygin Grand Prix draws in Russia

KRASNOYARSK, Russia – The first three U.S. men’s freestyle wrestlers have received their draws for the first day of the Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix, which starts on Friday.


The USA will have two entries at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. on Friday.


2014 U.S. World Team member Tony Ramos (Iowa City, Iowa/Titan Mercury WC/Hawkeye WC) opens against 2013 Junior World silver medalist Ismail Musukayev of Russia.


Matt McDonough (Iowa City, Iowa/Titan Mercury WC/Hawkeye WC), who is a member of the Freestyle National Team this year, drew Nodar Arabidze of Russia), who was fifth in the 2014 Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix.


Ramos and McDonough were NCAA champion for Iowa, with McDonough winning two titles and Ramos one. There are 46 wrestlers entered at 57 kg at the Yarygin Grand Prix.


Andrew Howe (Norman, Okla./New York AC) opens up at 74 kg/163 lbs. against Aslan Azizov of Kazakhstan, who was 10th in 2011 Junior World Championships.


Howe, a Junior World bronze medalist in 2009, was an NCAA champion for Wisconsin and a four-time All-American, finishing as an NCAA runner-up at Oklahoma.

Session times are 10:00 a.m. for preliminaries, 5:00 p.m. for Repechage and 7:30 p.m. for finals, Krasnoyarsk time. Please be aware that the time in Krasnoyarsk is 12 hours ahead of U.S. East Coast time.


The United States does not have any entries in the women’s competition this year.


There have only been 10 U.S. men’s freestyle wrestlers, and five U.S. women’s freestyle wrestlers to win the Yarygin International. All 10 of the U.S. men who have won this event became Olympians during their career. The last American men’s freestyler to win was Steve Mocco, the heavyweight champion in 2009.
