The group pairings for the 2015 Women’s Freestyle World Cup in St. Petersburg, Russia were released by United World Wrestling live from the #Super8 campaign launch in Lausanne, Switzerland this week.

The United States is slated to face Japan, Poland and Azerbaijan in Group A competition. At the 2014 World Championships, Japan finished in first place, the United States was third, Poland was seventh and Azerbaijan was eighth.

Host Russia headlines a competitive Group B pool that includes Ukraine, Mongolia and Sweden.

At the conclusion of group competition, the countries will cross bracket and compete in one additional dual to determine final placements.

“We are going there to win everything. We have the team that can win this. We have to piece it together, get everybody healthy and at the right weights. We are not taking a back seat to anyone. Everyone in our pool has solid teams, and we will have to be prepared,” said Terry Steiner, USA Wrestling’s National Women’s Coach.

Japan claimed the top spot at last year’s Women’s Freestyle World Cup over the runners-up Russia, and third place team, China. Japan beat Russia, 8-0, in the final dual. The United States placed sixth with a 1-3 record.

The last time that the United States won the Women’s World Cup was in 2003, when the USA defeated Japan in the championship match by a 14-13 margin. World silver medalist Toccara Montgomery of the USA beat World champion Kyoko Hamaguchi of Japan, 5-3 at 72 kg to secure the victory.

In addition, UWW released the draws for the Men’s Freestyle World Cup in Los Angeles, and the Greco-Roman World Cup in Tehran, Iran.
