CALGARY, Alberta, Canada – The United States won eight medals, including five golds, at the Nordhagen Junior Classic on Sunday.
Seven athletes from the U.S. FILA Cadet National Team entered the tournament, along with three athletes from the University of the Cumberlands program.
Claiming individual gold medals were:
• Sariyah Jones, Modesto, Calif. (USA Cadets) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs.
• Jerzie Estrada, Parker, Colo. (USA Cadets) at 51 kg/112.5 lbs.
• Maya Nelson, Denver, Colo. (USA Cadets) at 55 kg/121 lbs.
• Katerina Lobsinger, Concord, Calif. (USA Cadets) at 67 kg/147.7 lbs.
• Clarc Walker, Aubrey, Texas (Cumberlands) at 72 kg/158 lbs.
Jones, Estrada, Nelson and Walker went undefeated in their weight classes, winning all of their matches by either pin or technical fall.
Lobsinger went 1-2 in her four-athlete roundrobin, and won the tiebreaker with the most technical points, after scoring a pin and a technical fall.
A silver medal went to Kenya Spencer of Caro, Mich. (USA Cadets) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. Bronze medals were won by Theresa Rankin of Grass Lake, Mich. (USA Cadets) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. and Koral Sugiyama of Pocatello, Idaho (USA Cadets) at 59 kg/130 lbs.
The seven athletes from the USA FILA Cadet Team also competed on Friday in the Stu Hart Cadet Duals, where the USA team had a 5-0 dual meet record.
“We had a young team. They did a good job of staying calm. It took discipline and focus to compete so well. The matches which we won, they were wrestling their own match. In our losses, we let the opponent dictate their match. We have some things to work on, but we have many good things to build from,” said U.S. coach Emma Randall.
