CALGARY, Alberta, Canada – The United States won seven medals, including three golds, at the Nordhagen Classic on Saturday.
Claiming gold medals were Carlene Sluberski (Fredonia, N.Y./Brock WC) at 55 kg/121 lbs., Tamyra Mensah (Katy, Texas/Titan Mercury WC) at 69 kg/152 lbs. and Kelsey Campbell (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) at 58 kg/138 lbs.
Sluberski won a four-athlete roundrobin with a 3-0 record. Included was a victory over eventual silver medalist Michaela Hutchison (Lebanon, Ill./Titan Mercury WC), 10-5. Sluberski competes for Brock University in Canada.
Mensah, who competes for Wayland Baptist Univ. won all three of her bouts, including a victory in the gold-medal finals over Canadian Celeste Rodrigues of Sudbury, 8-2.
Campbell, a 2012 Olympian, won the 58 kg/128 lbs. weight class uncontested. She moved up to 60 kg/132 lbs., where she won a silver medal, going 2-1 in the roundrobin. Her only loss was to 2014 Canadian World Team member Michelle Fazzari of the Brock WC by a 0-1 score.
Campbell and Hutchison were the only U.S. silver medalists. Hutchison had a 2-1 record for the day.
Winning bronze medals for the USA were Jessica Medina (Champaign, Ill./Sunkist Kids) at 53 kg/116.5 lbs. and Kristen Yamasaki (Honolulu, Hawaii/Cumberlands) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.
Medina, a two-time U.S. World team member, lost her opening match to Canadian Jasmine Mian of Calgary in a 6-6 criteria match. Mian scored with five seconds left to win the bout. Medina battled back with three wins in the wrestlebacks to secure her bronze medal, two by technical fall and one by pin.
Yamasaki finished with a 2-2 record in a five-athlete roundrobin to secure her bronze medal. Her two wins were against teammates from the University of the Cumberlands
U.S. coach Emma Randall praised the efforts of the champions from the United States.
“The girls wrestled well. They did a great job staying focused and getting to their offense. They had some tough matches. It was a good tournament and a good experience for all of the U.S. wrestlers. They were also good role models for the U.S. Cadet wrestlers who were there supporting them today,” said Randall.
