CALGARY, Alberta, Canada – It will be U.S. women wrestlers who hit the mat first in 2015, competing at the Nordhagen Classic in Canada.
A team of top Senior-level wrestlers will be joined by American FILA Junior and FILA Cadet wrestlers in Canada this weekend.
The U.S. Senior athletes will include a number of National Team athletes, as well as other top competitors who are representing their club programs.
Among those expected to compete are 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Randi Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) and 2012 Olympian Kelsey Campbell (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids).
Two-time World bronze medalist Sally Roberts (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) and two-time U.S. World Team member Jessica Medina (Champaign, Ill./Sunkist Kids) are on the tentative lineup, as is 2014 U.S. Open champion Jackie Cataline (Alhambra, Calif./Titan Mercury WC).
There could be additional American athletes who attend the tournament as individuals or with their club programs.
The event is named in honor of Hall of Fame wrestler Christine Nordhagen of Canada, a six-time World Champion and 2004 Olympian.
As one of the pioneers of Women’s Wrestling, Nordhagen first started winning titles at Canada’s first National championship in 1992. When she began competing at the world championships in 1993, there were fewer than 150 Canadian women registered in wrestling. By the time she retired, there were more than 4,000 women, not counting non-registered girls at the high-school level. Nordhagen helped get the women’s side of the sport into the Olympics for the first time at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, where she finished fifth.
“I understand the need for international competition for young wrestlers,” says Nordhagen. “Each year the tournament builds on my dream of providing women in wrestling the best developmental opportunities.”
The event will feature over 45 international athletes competing in the Senior events on Saturday and the Junior events on Sunday. To date, six countries have registered including entries from the United States, Sweden, Norway, Marshall Islands, the Ivory Coast and Canada. The event will also feature an international training camp following on January 5 – 8, 2015.
A group of U.S. FILA Cadet women competed in the Stu Hart Cadet Duals on Friday. Many of these young women will enter the Junior Division of the Nordhagen Classic on Sunday.
