Team selection procedures have been approved and posted for athletes who wish to compete for the United States in Greco-Roman wrestling at the 2015 Senior World Championships, the 2015 Pan American Games and the 2015 UWW Junior World Championships.

The Senior World Championships will be held in Las Vegas, Nev., with Greco-Roman competition from Sept. 7-9.

The World Team Trials procedures have changed in Greco-Roman for this year. The first phase of the Trials process is the U.S. Open, set for Las Vegas, Nev., May 7-9. Any U.S. citizen who meets the UWW age requirements and is qualified to represent the United States in the World Championships may enter.

Athletes who finished in the Top 5 in the 2014 World Championships at the weight being contested will receive an automatic berth to the U.S. Open Finals/World Team Trials. Based upon 2014 World Championship results, Spenser Mango at 59 kg and Andy Bisek at 75 kg would qualify for this, if they enter the U.S. Open at that weight class.

The U.S. Open will be conducted in a one-day format using line bracketing. If Mango and Bisek enter in the weight class where they were in a 2014 World medal match, the rest of the entries will wrestle in a Trials Tournament in the morning session, with the winner advancing to the finals in the evening session. The winner of this match is the U.S. Open champion, and also has won the first match of the best-of-three series of the World Team Trials.

If no wrestler has earned an automatic berth at a weight class, the finals of the U.S. Open will decide the U.S. Open champion, and also the winner of the first match of the best-of-three series of the World Team Trials.

The second phase is the Greco-Roman World Team Trials in Ithaca, N.Y. on June 6. The two athletes in each weight who competed in the first match of the World Team Trials at the U.S. Open finals in Las Vegas will complete their best-of-three series in Ithaca.

Basically, the U.S. Open champion has a “leg-up” on the U.S. Open runner-up, leading the series 1 match to none going into the Ithaca event. The winner of the best-of-three series in Ithaca will earn a spot on the 2015 U.S. World Team at that weight class.

The Pan American Games will be held in Toronto, Canada, July 15-18. This major event, which includes nations from North, Central and South America, is held every four years.

The Pan American Games athlete selection procedures have also been approved and posted. The qualification process is basically the same as those for the U.S. Greco-Roman World Team, except for one important difference. There will only be six weight classes contested at the Pan American Games (the Olympic weight classes), which are 59 kg, 66 kg, 75 kg, 85 kg, 98 kg and 130 kg.

The winners of the best-of-three series in Ithaca at these six Olympic weight classes will become the nominee for the 2015 Pan American Games team.

Please note, the USA must qualify to compete in the Pan American Games in all six weight classes. The winner of the best-of-three series in the Olympic weight classes in Ithaca will qualify for the Pan American Games in that weight only if the USA has met the qualifying procedures for the Pan American Games.

The UWW Junior World Championships will be held in Recife, Brazil, August 11-16. Athletes in the UWW Junior age division includes those who are 17-20 years old.

The procedures for the U.S. Junior World Team in Greco-Roman have also been approved and posted. This year, procedure in Greco-Roman has also changed.

The UWW Junior Greco-Roman Nationals/World Team Trials will be held in Las Vegas, Nev., with the Greco-Roman competition on May 7. Any U.S. citizen who meets the UWW age requirements and is qualified to represent the United States in the World Championships may enter.

In the first session, the UWW Junior Greco-Roman Nationals will be competed through the semifinal round. The winners of the semifinals will advance to the finals, which will be a best-of-three championships series. The winner of the finals series in each weight class will qualify to compete at the UWW Junior World Championships.
