NORMAN, Okla. – The preseason No. 1 needed a spark.
Kaid Brock, a true freshman from Stillwater who has dreamed of wearing the orange and black of Oklahoma State since he could walk, went above and beyond simply providing a spark on Sunday afternoon.
The 133-pounder squared off with 2015 NCAA champion Cody Brewer of Oklahoma in his first varsity match after an unbeaten start in Open tournaments this fall. An initial takedown had the McCasland Fieldhouse crowd buzzing. Moments later, Brock went double-overhook, inside trip and pinned Brewer at the 42-second mark. Brock, and the OSU bench, went wild and proceeded to hammer their Bedlam rivals, 37-3.
“I think that is kind of what our team was looking for, a little spark,” said OSU head coach John Smith, whose ninth-ranked squad rebounded from a 19-15 loss to North Carolina State on home mats last Sunday. “There’s no question the result of the 133-pound match had a big difference. Guys love to see pins, major decisions, grinding out that last takedown in a tough match.
“Kaid’s been with us since he was five years old. He has a lot of skill and grew up with not a lot of fear.”
Top-ranked 141-pounder Dean Heil knew Brock had the potential to not just challenge Brewer, but beat the veteran.
“I’ve worked with (Brock) almost every day the last two, three weeks,” Heil said. “Your with me, your with me, your with me every day. I felt like he was ready. He goes out and gets that first takedown and I felt like this was his match. He had the right mentality all week.
“After that pin, the team was on cloud nine. It definitely impacted the way the dual turned out.”
The soft-spoken Brock, a three-time Oklahoma state champion, said, “I wasn’t going to back down. You can’t do that. You have to go after it.”
The shocking pin put OSU up 9-0 and started a run that saw the visitors seal the deal after two-time NCAA champion Alex Dieringer’s major decision at 165 pounds.
Heil (8-0) dominated Trae Blackwell, 13-3, at 141 pounds. Cowboy backup Jonce Blaylock (14-3) followed with a 10-2 major decision of OU’s Davion Jeffries at 149 pounds. Rookie 157-pounder Chance Marsteller (6-4) found some third period energy and whipped Brock Wingbermuehle, 16-1.
Dieringer (8-0) moved his win streak to 57 with a 13-4 major of Clark Glass and the Cowboys (3-2) beat Oklahoma for the 11th time in 12 meetings.
“I think we did some things this week to make sure some people understand that if we are going to get better we have to make sure we recognize that we have to put the effort in,” Smith said. “It’s how you work in practice. You spend 20 hours a week to wrestle one seven-minute match. It’s silly when you don’t make that match close to perfection.”
All-American Kyle Crutchmer (8-0) used two third period takedowns to beat Matt Reed at 174 pounds with Nolan Boyd (9-4) mauling Andrew Dixon, 17-2, in less than five minutes at 184 pounds.
Mark Cody’s Sooners (5-1) did not score a takedown until the 197-pound match, an 8-6 win by Brad Johnson (4-0) over Austin Schafer. The hosts’ other offensive points came in the first period of a 5-3 Eddie Klimara (11-1) win over Ryan Milhof, who recorded a first-period reversal.
“We are better than we wrestled today,” said Cody, whose team was coming off a solid performance at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational last weekend.
The final bout saw All-American Austin Marsden (8-2) get by Ross Larson, 6-1, at 285 pounds in a battle of top 10 heavyweights.
OSU travels to Wyoming this Friday before heading to Chattanooga for the annual Southern Scuffle where more questions will be answered. The Sooners will try and rebound at home against No. 13 Lehigh next Sunday.
