CONTAGEM, Brazil – The United States had a pair of individual champion at the Brazil Cup in Contagem, Brazil, 2015 World champion Kyle Snyder (Woodbine, Md./Titan Mercury WC/Ohio RTC) at 97 kg/213 lbs. and Tyler Graff (New Brunswick, N.J./New York AC) at 57 kg/125.5 lbs.
The U.S. wrestlers had a combined five matches, winning them all by technical fall, in a combined 5:12.
Snyder won a three-athlete roundrobin, scoring 10-0 technical falls over Kato Robson and Victo Paulo of Brazil.
Snyder was competing for the first time since winning his World title in Las Vegas in September, becoming the youngest American to win a Senior World title at the age of 19. He is currently on an Olympic redshirt year from Ohio State. Snyder also boasts a 2013 Junior World title.
Graff had three straight 10-0 technical falls. He beat Uziel Correa of Brazil in the gold-medal match, after victories over Felipe Esteves of Brazil and Alexis Magallenes of Mexico.
Graff, an NCAA runner-up for Wisconsin, is coming off a victory at the Bill Farrell International in New York City in November.
“This is the second year in a row that USA Wrestling has brought a team to the Brazil Cup. Both times have been very good experience as we make preparations for the Rio Olympic Games and the Brazilian Wrestling Federation have been gracious hosts. For our two champions, Tyler and Kyle, this event is about performing, in competition, the skills you have been training. They have both done this exceptionally well on their paths to winning gold medals. There is plenty more to be done before we return to Brazil in August and we are looking forward to the process,” said Assistant National Freestyle Coach Bill Zadick.
