Martinez, a 2015 Cadet Nationals champion in Fargo, won three matches to reach the finals. She opened with a pin over Florenta Diaconu of Moldova in the opening match. In the quarterfinals, she edged Aynur Ege of Turkey, 2-1. Her semifinal match was also very close, a 3-2 win over Maria Tiumerekova of Russia.

She hopes to join U.S. teammate Ronna Heaton of Brookings, S.D. as a Cadet World champion, after Heaton won the gold medal at 49 kg/108 lbs.

Going for a bronze at 70 kg/154 lbs. is Alexis Bleau of Berne, N.Y., who will face 2015 Asian Cadet silver medalist Tsetsegbayar Byambadorj of Mongolia in the bronze-medal round.

Bleau was defeated in her first match by 2013 Cadet World silver medalist Mei Shindo of Japan. When Shindo reached the finals, Bleau was pulled back into repechage, where she dominated Justyna Walotek of Poland, who she dominated with multiple takedowns for a 10-0 technical fall.

2015 Junior Nationals champion Gracie Figueroa lost two close matches to some of the best young women in the world at 52 kg/114.5 lbs. In her opener, Figueroa was edged by 2015 Junior World champion Leyla Gurbanov of Azerbaijan, 3-4. When Gurbanov made the finals, Figueroa was drawn back into repechage, where she dropped a 2-4 match to Sae Nanjo of Japan.
