Stoll places fifth in Greco-Roman at UWW Junior Worlds in Brazil

Sam Stoll battles Osman Yilidirim of Turkey in the bronze-medal match at the UWW Junior Worlds.
SALVADOR, Brazil - Sam Stoll (Kasson, Minn./Minnesota Storm/Hawkeye WC) placed fifth at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. on the final day of Greco-Roman the UWW Junior World Championships on Wednesday.
Stoll was defeated by 2014 UWW Junior World bronze medalist Osman Yilidirim of Turkey in his bronze-medal bout 5-1.
Yildirim led 1-0 at the break, after scoring a pushout. In the second period, Yildirim scored four more pushouts to lead 5-0. A late pushout by Stoll made it 5-1 when it ended.
Stoll, a 2013 UWW Junior World bronze medalist, was attempting to win his second career UWW Junior World medal. He finished the meet with a 2-2 record.
Stoll, who competes for the University of Iowa, was a high school student in Minnesota when he won his 2013 bronze medal.
Stoll won his first match, pinning Mohammed Sayed Abdelatif of Egypt in 1:24, then defeated Jello Krahmer of Germany, 4-1 in the quarterfinals. He fell in the semifinals to 2014 Cadet World champion Zviadi Pataridze of Georgia in a 0-8 technical fall.
“I didn’t wrestle good in the semis. It’s the same old story, but this time I didn’t take bronze. You can say he didn’t score offensively, that he got pushouts, but that’s offense. He scored on me and I didn’t score on him. Maybe he was a little stronger than me. He beat me on position a little bit. He wrestled the match better than I did,” said Stoll.
Stoll was the only U.S. Greco-Roman wrestler to reach a medal match at this year’s UWW Junior World Championships.
“Tactically, he wrestled a great first period. In the second period, he did OK. We knew the kid had a good right side underhook. The guy pushed him out for one-pointers. That was the difference in the match. He did a good job. He is not training Greco-Roman all year. He is young, 20 years old, and we expect good things at the University of Iowa and at the Senior level. He is the future of our sport at heavyweight,” said U.S. coach Mark Halvorson.
On Wednesday, Hayden Tuma, Boise, Idaho (Suples WC) went 1-1 at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., losing a close 1-4 match to two-time Junior World finalist
Going 0-1 on Wednesday were Josiah Seaton (Bonner Springs, Kan.) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Nick Corba, (Beavercreek, Ohio/NEORTC) at 84 kg/185 lbs.
Georgia won the team title, with Azerbaijan in second and Russia in third.
