Dalton Roberts of the USA battles Amangali Bekbolatov of Kazakhstan in the 50 kg quarterfinals in Greco-Roman at the UWW Junior Worlds in Brazil.

SALVADOR, Brazil – All four U.S. Greco-Roman athletes suffered losses and were eliminated in the opening session of the UWW Junior World Championships on Tuesday.

At 50 kg/110 lbs., Dalton Roberts (Fowlerville, Mich./NMU-OTS) was the only American to win a bout. He had an amazing come-from behind win in his opening bout, pinning 2015 European Junior bronze medalist Nedyako Petrov of Bulgaria with 12 seconds left in the match.

Roberts fell behind in the first period 8-1, but had a furious second-period comeback. A big move gave him a 10-8 lead in the final minute of the match, Petrov, who was fifth in the 2014 Junior World Championships, tried a throw, which Roberts countered and scored the pin.

In the quarterfinals, Roberts was defeated by Amangali Bekbolatov of Kazakhstan by technical fall, 0-8. Bekbolat scored a takedown, then three gut wrenches to finish the bout.

Roberts was eliminated when Bekbolatov was beaten in the semifinals by Reza Khedri of Iran, and thus ineligible for the repechage. This is Roberts’ second age-group World team, also competing at the 2012 UWW Cadet World Championships.

“Our lightweight Dalton Roberts had a really good first match. He needed to carry through on that second match. He was down 7-1 in that first match, had a 30-second break, and retooled. He re-thought what he was doing, changed up a couple of things, took a 10-8 lead and then a pin. He did an unbelievable good job refocusing and coming back to score points,” said U.S. coach Zac Dominguez.

Cadet World bronze medalist Jon Jay Chavez (Boise, Idaho/Titan Mercury WC) opened up with a loss at 74 kg/163 lbs. Nordic Junior silver medalist Alex Kessidis of Sweden was able to lock up and throw Chavez to his back twice, both four-point throws, for an 8-0 technical fall in 45 seconds. Chavez was eliminated when Kessidis was beaten in the semifinals by

At 60 kg/132 lbs., Travis Rice (Washington, Ill./NMU-OTS) lost a tough opening match to Avgustin Spasov of Bulgaria, 5-7. The bout was tied 3-3 in the first period, but Spasov had a four-point move to make it 3-7 at the break. Officials penalized Spasov twice in the second period for passivity, closing the gap to two points, but he was able to hold off Rice’s attack for the win.

Rice was eliminated when Spasov was beaten in the quarterfinals by Serhey Emelin of Russia

G’Angelo Hancock (Colorado Springs, Colo./Front Range WC) fell in his opener at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.,dropping a 2-11 technical fall to Soslan Fanziyev of Azerbaijan. Fanziyev had two four-point throws as part of his offensive attack. Hancock was knocked out as Fanziyev fell to Hosseimi Amirhossein of Iran in the quarterfinals.

“This is a World Championships. We have to show up for every match. The boys were prepared. The boys trained well. When that whistle blows, you have to be ready to go. We had some tough first starts,” said U.S. coach Zac Dominguez.

The final four U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers weigh in today and compete on Wednesday. An update on pairings will be posted later.

Tonight’s Opening Ceremony is at 7:00 p.m. local time. The finals begin at 7:30 p.m. Salvador is one hour ahead of U.S. Eastern time.
