U.S. National Team member Zach Rey has been added to the United States men’s freestyle roster for the World Championships.
Rey (Bethlehem, Pa./Lehigh Valley WC) will replace two-time World bronze medalist Tervel Dlagnev, who is sidelined with an injury.
Rey is scheduled to compete at the World Championships for the U.S. at 125 kg/275 lbs. on Sept. 12 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
Rey finished second to Dlagnev (Columbus, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) at the U.S. Open and U.S. World Team Trials this year.
Rey won a Pan American Championships title in April in Santiago, Chile and captured a Pan American Games gold medal last month in Toronto, Canada. He also replaced Dlagnev at the Pan Am Games.
Rey, 26, a New Jersey native, was a 2011 NCAA champion for Lehigh. He is a wrestler who has excelled on the international stage.
Also this year, Rey won the Cerro Pelado International in Cuba and placed third at the Alexander Medved International in Belarus. He also competed for the U.S. at the World Cup in Los Angeles.
Rey is ranked No. 17 in the World at 125 kg by United World Wrestling.
Dlagnev, who won June’s World Team Trials, has made every U.S. World and Olympic Team but one since 2009. He placed fifth at the 2012 Olympic Games and is looking to return to competition next season.
The U.S. will compete at the World Championships in men’s freestyle, women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling on Sept. 7-12 in Las Vegas.
