Infostrada Sports, which produces a Virtual Medal Table for the upcoming 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, predicted one year before the start of the Games that the United States will win six Olympic medals in wrestling, including three gold medals.

The gold medals in their prediction would be won by Jordan Burroughs (men’s freestyle, 74 kg), Elena Pirozhkova (women’s freestyle, 63 kg) and Adeline Gray (women’s freestyle, 75 kg).

Getting a silver would be Andy Bisek (Greco-Roman, 75 kg).

Bronze medals are predicted for Brent Metcalf (men’s freestyle, 65 kg) and Tervel Dlagnev (men’s freestyle, 125 kg).

Of these wrestlers, only Burroughs is a previous Olympic medalist, with a gold medal in London. Pirozhkova and Dlagnev were 2012 Olympians but did not medal.

This would be an increase in wrestling medals for the United States from London 2012, which included four medals, including two golds.

In addition to individual medals, the Virtual Medal Table also looks at the team medal standings.

In the prediction one year before the Games, Infostrada Sports predicts the United States will win the medal count in Rio with 99 medals, including 46 gold, 20 silver and 33 bronze. This is fewer than previous Summer Games, as US athletes have won 100 medals or more at each edition of the Summer Games since 2004.

China will be second in gold medals with 31, and 72 medals total. Next would be Russia, with 22 gold medals and 75 medals total. Rounding out the top five are Germany with 16 golds and 50 total medals and France with 16 golds and 43 total medals.

The Virtual Medal Table provides unique insights into identifying the countries and athletes that are most likely to be successful at the 2016 Olympic Games. The VMT is dynamic, as monthly updates illustrate the changing balance of power in Olympic sports leading up to Rio 2016.
