Metcalf, USA rout Mongolia to storm into World Cup finals against Iran

LOS ANGELES – Brent Metcalf has provided a huge spark for the U.S. World Cup freestyle team.
Metcalf’s aggressive, attacking style was on full display and his teammates followed suit to power the U.S. into the finals of the World Cup before 2,500 fans on Sunday at the L.A. Forum.
The U.S. routed Mongolia 8-0 to advance to the World Cup finals, set for 5:45 p.m. Sunday. The Americans, who went 3-0 in their pool, will face returning champion Iran in the finals. The U.S. is seeking their first World Cup title since 2003. The finals will be televised live on the NBC Sports Network.
Metcalf set a high pace in dominating two-time World bronze medalist Mandakhnaran Ganzorig of Mongolia 8-2 at 65 kg/143 lbs. to win his third straight match in the event.
“He was very good at what I expected him to be good at,” said Metcalf, a three-time World Team member who won two NCAA titles for the Iowa Hawkeyes. “I felt really good and knew what I needed to do. I felt like I left some points out there, but I wrestled smart too. I want to get to my offense going earlier. I always get stronger as the match goes on.”
2014 World Team member Tony Ramos and 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Coleman Scott kick-started the Americans with back-to-back wins to open the dual.
Metcalf’s win followed before 2014 World Team member Nick Marable and Olympic gold medalist Jordan Burroughs followed with wins to clinch the dual win for the U.S.
“I got to open it up more and score more points,” Marable said. “I just got to go out there and wrestle harder. I know I can score on the best guys in the World, it’s just a matter of doing it. I feel like I’m progressing, but I have some things I can build on.”
Burroughs, also a two-time World champion and three-time World medalist, scored three takedowns to down defensive-minded Unurbat Purevjav of Mongolia 6-0. Burroughs is now 101-2 in his career and 18-0 in the World Cup.
Americans Clayton Foster, Jake Varner and Tervel Dlagnev followed with wins to complete the American shutout over Mongolia.
