24 COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES TO PARTAKE IN DAY LONG DUAL MEET EVENT AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN ON SUNDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2014
New York, NY, October 17, 2014 — MSG Sports announced today that an unprecedented 24 colleges and universities, led by five top 20 NCAA 2014 national tournament finishers -- Edinboro (No.5) Cornell (No.7), Northern Iowa (No.15), Lehigh (No.18), and Maryland (No.20) -- along with local powers Rutgers and Hofstra, will participate in the third annual Grapple at the Garden Presented by Suplay.com. The college wrestling dual meet event takes place Sunday, December 21 at Madison Square Garden.
Tickets, priced at $20.00, $35.00 and $55.00, are currently on sale and can be purchased online at www.thegarden.com, all Ticketmaster locations and the Madison Square Garden box office.
The much anticipated Grapple at the Garden, which has become a featured event during the wrestling season, will bring together the largest group of college programs, including 14 Division I, three Division II, three Division III, and two Community Colleges featuring Bucknell, Cornell, Davidson, Drexel, Duke, Edinboro, George Mason, Lehigh, Maryland, Middlesex CC, Minnesota State – Moorhead, Mount Saint Vincent, Northern Iowa, Southern Maine, SUNY Sullivan, Wheeling Jesuit, as well as local programs Army, LIU Post, Hofstra, Princeton, Rutgers and Stevens Institute. In addition, the club teams from Stony Brook and Montclair State will also be participating.
Grapple at the Garden Presented by Suplay.com will feature several stand-out athletes including No. 1 ranked wrestlers Nahshon Garrett and Gabe Dean from Cornell and AJ Schopp from Edinboro. Also on hand for the all day event will be No. 2 ranked and two-time All American, Mitchell Port from Edinboro; No. 3 ranked wrestler Dylan Peters from Northern Iowa; No. 4 ranked - Christopher Villalonga from Cornell and Cooper Moore from Northern Iowa as well as No. 5 wrestler David Habat from Edinboro. Additionally, Rutgers put its first All-American on the podium since 2002 in redshirt junior Anthony Perrotti.
The full day of wrestling on December 21 will feature three collegiate sessions with the first starting at 8:00 a.m. with Northern Iowa v. Duke, Stony Brook v. Montclair State, Mount Saint Vincent v. Wheeling Jesuit, LIU Post v. Minn. St. Moorhead, So. Maine v. Stevens and SUNY Sullivan v. Middlesex CC. Session two begins at 10:00 a.m. and will include Northern Iowa vs. Drexel, Edinboro vs. Cornell, Rutgers vs. Army, Maryland vs. Hofstra, Lehigh vs. Princeton, Duke vs. George Mason and Davidson vs. Bucknell. Session starts at noon and will showcase Drexel vs. George Mason, Northern Iowa vs. Cornell, Maryland vs. Duke, Army vs. Princeton, Lehigh vs. Edinboro, Hofstra vs. Bucknell and Davidson vs. Rutgers.
On Saturday, December 20, the 2014-15 NYC Mayor’s Cup Wrestling Championships will take place at Riverbank State Park, after which the winners and runners-up from each weight class will take on the best high school wrestlers from the Metropolitan Division as part of the Grapple at the Garden presented by Suplay.com on Sunday, December 21.
The NYC Mayor’s Cup will, once again, feature the best New York City high school wrestlers from the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL), Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) and independent school wrestlers in each weight class as they compete for the title of “Best in the City”. The Metropolitan Division portion of the Grapple at the Garden high school invitational will take place on Saturday, December 20 at Clarkstown South High School and will include: Long Beach (NY), Long Branch (NJ), Clarkstown South (NY), Hasbrouck Heights (NJ), Columbia (NY), Chenengo Forks (NY), John Glenn (NY), Colonie (NY), Eastport South Manor (NY) and Nutley (NJ).
Grapple at the Garden Presented by Suplay.com will also feature middle school and elementary school championships, produced in association with the Metropolitan Wrestling Association.
