Bryce Saddoris of the USA ties up Ahmed Abdou Omar Abdou of Egypt in the CISM Military Worlds at Fort Dix, N.J.

FORT DIX, N.J. – U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers 1stLt Bryce Saddoris of the U.S. Marine Corps at 66 kg and CPT Jon Anderson of the U.S. Army at 75 kg have qualified for the semifinals at the CISM World Military Wrestling Championships at Joint Base McGuire – Dix – Lakehurst, in New Jersey on Saturday.

A member of the 2014 U.S. World Team, Saddoris opened with a 3-1 quarterfinal win at 66 kg over Anil Kumar of India, a 2012 Dave Schultz Memorial International champion. Saddoris scored a first-period gut wrench for two points and a second period pushout for his victory.

Saddoris, an NCAA Div. I All-American for the U.S. Naval Academy, will face 2005 CISM Military World bronze medalist Ruslan Israfilov of Ukraine in the semifinals, a session which begins at 2:00 p.m.

West Point graduate Anderson scored an impressive second period pin against Ahmed Abdou Omar Abdou of Egypt in 3:37. Anderson fell behind 0-4 on an early four-point throw by Abdou, but battled back to tie it up at 4-4 at break. In the second period, Abdou attempted a throw, which Anderson blocked, putting Abdou on his back. Anderson pressed and earned the fall.

Anderson, who was second at the 2014 U.S. World Team Trials, has drawn Yevhen Pyshkov of Ukraine.

“Saddoris, coming off the World Championships, had to drop some weight and is mentally and physically tired. But, he strapped it up and came hard. He wrestled very soundly, which is what we expect from him. Anderson is a warrior. He will bring it. We don’t worry when an opponent scores on him. He has an open style. We never panic when they score, because he will fight back and score,” said U.S. coach Shon Lewis.

Two-time Olympian SGT Spenser Mango of the U.S. Army opened at 59 kg with an 8-2 win over two-time CISM World Military medalist Vugar Ragyumov of Ukraine. Mango led 6-0 at the break after three first-period gut wrench turns. Ragyumov scored a turn in the second period, but Mango kept on the pressure to secure the win.

In his second match, Mango faced a much taller opponent, Haitham Ma Ahmed of Egypt, and lost 0-6. Ahmed scored on two one-point moves on the mat for a 2-0 lead. In the second period, Ahmed got up to his feet from par terre and quickly threw Mango for four points, closing out the match.

Mango, who placed fifth at the World Championships in both 2013 and 2014, is competing in his first CISM Military World Championships.

“Spenser lost in the quarters. He is a little dinged up. The Egyptian is a professional and experience, and we hope he will bring Spenser back in, where he will need to win two matches to get a medal,” said Lewis.

At 71 kg, Sgt Joseph Foreman of the U.S. Marine Corps opened with an impressive 14-3 technical fall in the first period over Angelo Rafael Marques Moreira of Brazil. Although Moreira scored first, Foreman got his offense going, hitting two four-point throws, including an arm throw and a headlock.

Foreman dropped his second match to Akrem Boudjenline of Algeria by technical fall, 0-8 in the first period. Boudjeline scored a takedown and three gut wrenches in a row to end the match.

The structure of the Greco-Roman tournament differs from the first two days. The tournament starts each morning at 9:00 a.m., which includes the preliminaries and the quarterfinals. After a lunch break, the athletes return at 2:00 p.m. for the semifinals and repechage. The finals will follow immediately at 3:30 p.m., which is three hours earlier than the freestyle tournament.

Because there is no break between Session II and the finals in Session III, we will post our first story each day after the quarterfinals.
