MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Eddie Klimara and Oklahoma State tried to make it interesting on Saturday night, but in the end, Minnesota’s Gophers were the better team in a 19-15 victory inside the Sports Pavilion.

After Klimara pinned Sam Brancale at 4:58 of the 125-pound bout to tie the dual at 9-9, the Gophers relied on the Dardanes brothers and top-ranked Dylan Ness to close the deal.

Chris Dardanes dominated Brian Crutchmer, 20-8, in a 133-pound bout that saw five third-period takedowns by the Gopher. Nick Dardanes then beat a game freshman, Dean Heil, 9-5, at 141 pounds. The heavier Dardanes scored takedowns in the closing ten seconds of the first and second periods. The scoreboard quickly went from tied to 16-9 with three bouts remaining.

“I think it works well for the team, having me and Nick back-to-back,” said Chris, a two-time All-American and back at 133 pounds for his senior season. “When we saw the draw, that we were going later in the dual, I know I was ready to go. (OSU) had some momentum, but I think we all still felt comfortable with what we had left to throw out there.

“I know we needed bonus and that is what I am looking for every time I step out there.”

The Cowboys gave themselves a shot when Josh Kindig edged rookie Jake Short, 4-1, at 149 pounds, but top-ranked and two-time NCAA finalist Dylan Ness then shut the door, beating Anthony Collica, 6-0, at 157 pounds to forge a seven-point lead with one bout to wrestle.

“I think we have a lot of work to do,” said J Robinson, in his 29th year as UM head coach. “We had some things we didn’t get done tonight; a couple of places where we felt like we should have gotten bonus points. A couple of bonus points at the national tournament last year and things are different. Those are things we continue to work on.”

2014 NCAA champion Alex Dieringer fashioned the final score, beating another UM rookie, Nick Wanzek, 9-2, at 165 pounds.

The win pushed Minnesota’s win streak against OSU to three and was a fourth in five meetings.

Robinson’s Gophers took a 9-0 lead on meticulous decisions at 174, 184, and 197 pounds. Top-ranked Logan Storley, a three-time All-American, controlled Kyle Crutchmer, 8-1, in the opener with Brett Pfarr beating Nolan Boyd, 5-1, in a sloppy 184-pound match; Scott Schiller, a two-time All-American, handled Austin Schafer, 10-4, at 197 pounds. Pfarr, a sophomore, scored a takedown with :05 left in the second period and scrambled his way out of a handful of wild Boyd attempts over the final two minutes.

In the end, the 184-pound match proved very important.

“You never know how things will play out,” said Robinson. “In duals like (tonight), you go back, and look at a match or two and see the importance of finishing, getting wins no matter how.”

OSU All-American Austin Marsden then gave the visitors a heartbeat, beating Micheal Kroells, 8-2, at 285 pounds. Klimara, a two-time NCAA qualifier battling back from a suspension stemming from off-the-mat issues last March, fell behind Brancale, 4-2, early in the second period. But, after a takedown, the OSU junior caught Brancale near the edge of the mat and secured a big fall to forge a tie.

“We knew it was going to be a tough go for us,” said OSU head coach John Smith, whose squad hosts Oklahoma next Sunday. “Our key was to create a scenario where we could put people in matches, put our team in the match. I think we had a little bit of it and then there were some guys who didn’t.

“We just have to understand that when we suit up that we have to try to win … period. I felt like we had too many guys that were surviving matches.”
