FLASH: Titan Mercury WC places second at Freestyle World Clubs Cup in Iran

JOUYBAR, Iran - The Titan Mercury Wrestling Club, a top club from the United States placed second at the Freestyle World Clubs Cup, a new UWW event held on Thursday and Friday. Fifteen club teams from around the world participated in this inaugural event.


The Titan Mercury WC, which won the B Pool on Thursday, won its semifinal match over the Chinese club Union Wrestling by an 8-0 shutout.


Deron Winn (86 kg) won his bout by pin, and technical falls were registered by Reece Humphrey (65 kg), Adam Hall (70 kg) and Tyrell Fortune (125 kg). Other U.S. winners against China were Tony Ramos (57 kg), Andrew Howe (74 kg) and Wynn Michalak (98 kg). The USA beat China by forfeit at 61 kg.


The championship finals matchup featured the Bimeh Razi Jouybar club from Iran, which is the hometown club team based in Jouybar. The Iranian team featured some members of the Iranian national team, including World champions Hassan Rahimi (57 kg) and Mehdi Taghavi (70 kg), as Russian World champion Bekhan Guygereev (61 kg) and Russian World medalist Magomed Kurbanaliev (65 kg).


Titan Mercury claimed two wins in the dual meet, falling 2-6. At 74 kg, 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials runner-up Andrew Howe defeated 2013 World silver medalist Ezatollah Akbari, 2-1. At heavyweight, 2014 University World champion Tyrell Fortune stopped Seyed Reza Mousavi in a 3-3 criteria decision.


For the two-day event, Titan Mercury WC had a 4-1 record. Going unbeaten in their matches were Andrew Howe, who was 5-0 for the tournament and Tyrell Fortune, who had a 4-0 record for the two days.
