A team of men’s freestyle wrestlers, including national team members and top FILA Junior athletes, will wrestle in the Brazil Cup in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, November 28-29.

“It’s is a kind of test event in Brazil for the Olympics. Every competition is important. Post World Championships, this is our first major competition in the fall as our National Team starts back up. We have a broad mix of national team athletes and top developmental guys. It is very important to start the building process as we head into the new year, with the 2015 Worlds in Las Vegas,” said Assistant National Freestyle Coach Bill Zadick.

A mixed team of men and women freestyle wrestlers will enter the 40th annual Henri Deglane Challenge in Nice, France on November 28-29.

On the women’s side, four-time World medalist Elena Pirozhkova (Colorado Springs, Colo./Titan Mercury WC) is at 63 kg/138.75 lbs., two-time World medalist Helen Maroulis (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) is at 55 kg/121 lbs., and 2013 World Team member Victoria Anthony (Huntington Beach, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) is at 48 kg/105.5 lbs.in France.

“They are three of our best athletes. They are mainstays on our national team. They have been travelling a lot this fall, trying to learn more about themselves and how they can improve on a daily basis. They are putting themselves in front of their competition and in tough environments with all the travel,” said National Women’s Coach Terry Steiner.

Three U.S. men freestylers will also wrestle in Nice, 2014 Junior World silver medalist Aaron Pico, Whittier, Calif. (Titan Mercury WC) at 143, plus young Senior stars Montel Marion, Iowa City, Iowa (Titan Mercury WC) at 65 kg/143 lbs. and Jason Welch, Evanston, Ill. (Chicago RTC/Wrestling Prep) at 74 kg/163 lbs.

“The Henri Deglane Challenge is a good tournament. As the Olympic year approaches, it becomes a stronger competition. It should be a good experience for the guys going over there. This is the 40th anniversary of the tournament and the French Federation is building it up. They want to make it a great competition,” said Zadick.

The Titan Mercury Wrestling Club, a top club from the United States, is funding a team that will compete at the Freestyle World Clubs Cup, a new event being held in Joybar, Iran, November 27.

Talented club teams from around the world have been invited to participate in this dual meet event. Titan Mercury WC is the only club from the United States included in the field this year.

The U.S. team will feature two-time World Team member Reece Humphrey (Columbus, Ohio/New York AC) at 65 kg/143 lbs. and 2014 U.S. World Team member Tony Ramos (Iowa City, Iowa/Titan Mercury WC) at 57 kg/125.5 lbs.

“I have never been there. I am excited. I have seen videos from the World Championships there. I have heard stories. It is a great opportunity when they asked me to go do it. I am getting ready. I am looking forward to getting some top international competition,” said 2014 World Team member Tony Ramos.
