Farrar named VAWA’s Executive Director, to lead USA Wrestling association in Virginia

The Virginia Wrestling Association (VAWA) has selected Andrew Farrar to be the state’s first ever Executive Director. Farrar will begin his new position on June 2, 2014. The VAWA is USA Wrestling’s state association in Virginia.
Farrar returns to Virginia after three years of coaching, teaching, and advising at the St. Mark’s School of Texas in Dallas, where he was the associate head coach of the wrestling program. Outside of school, he coached alongside Kendall Cross, David Kjeldgaard and Melvin Lofton at the Dallas Dynamite Wrestling Club.
Prior to his time in Dallas, he worked for Phillips Realty Capital from 2006-2011 in Bethesda, Md. as well as coaching at Episcopal High School and the Gunston Wrestling Club in Alexandria, Va. He has been a member of the Virginia and Texas national team coaching staffs and brings a variety of experiences from his time in the commercial real estate industry, teaching and coaching at an all-boys school and relationships with two successful wrestling clubs.
“I feel like I can make an impact and build on the positive momentum that VAWA has generated over the last few years”, Farrar said. “I’m excited to get to work and want to thank Bill Swink and the Board of Directors for their vision and the creation of this position. I’ve always been proud of my Virginia roots and felt drawn to this opportunity to come home and help the sport at all levels around the state.”

His experience with USA Wrestling, his coaching background with USA Wrestling clubs and in high school and his business background make him a great fit. We are looking forward to his impact with our various programs that we offer statewide. Virginia wrestling will benefit immensely from his addition,” said Bill Swink, Virginia Wrestling Association State Chairman.
No stranger to USA Wrestling, Farrar served as a volunteer on the USA Wrestling staff at the 2012 Olympics in London and the 2013 World Team Trials where he assisted Larry Nugent, the Director of Development for USA Wrestling.
“I’m thrilled that Andrew Farrar has been chosen to a leadership position within our great sport, but I’m even more excited for VAWA because I’m certain he can significantly move the needle in the right direction,” said Nugent.
Farrar is originally from Roanoke, Va. He attended Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va., and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2006 where he majored in Economics and was a member of the 2003 ACC Championship wrestling team.
As a coach, Farrar has worked with wrestlers from Episcopal and St. Mark’s who have gone on to wrestle in college at Franklin & Marshall, Washington & Lee, Harvard, Stanford, Trinity College and New York University.
During his tenure, St. Mark’s produced three state champions and five state finalists. Over the past three years, the Dallas Dynamite has continued to build upon the strong foundation established by former coaches and Olympic medalists Brandon Slay and Jamill Kelly, producing many Texas freestyle & Greco state champions and multiple Fargo All-Americans. This was highlighted by Jack Mueller’s 2013 Cadet Freestyle national championship, where he did not surrender a single point.
“I’ve been very lucky to learn from and work with some great coaches like Justin Turner at St. Mark’s, Kendall Cross, Melvin Lofton and David Kjeldgaard at Dynamite. I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to come home and help wrestling continue to grow in Virginia”, Farrar said. “This is an exciting time in our sport and I’m looking forward to hitting the ground running with the Virginia Cadet and Junior national teams this summer.”
