USA loses 4-4 criteria dual meet to Mongolia to take sixth at Women’s World Cup

TOKYO, Japan – The United States dropped a 4-4 criteria decision in the fifth-place dual meet to Mongolia, and finished sixth at the Women’s World Cup with a 1-3 record.


The difference in the tie-breaker was the most technical falls in the dual meet, with one for Mongolia.


Winning bouts for the United States were Helen Maroulis (53 kg), Alli Ragan (58 kg), Elena Pirozhkova (63 kg) and Adeline Gray (72 kg).


Maroulis scored a pin over Erdenechimeg Sumiya in 2:41. Ragan had an 8-6 win over Sukhee Tserenchimegd. Pirozhkova scored a 5-4 win over Nasanburmaa Ochirbat. Gray edged Burmaa Ochirbat, 5-4.


For the tournament, three Americans finished with undefeated records.


Adeline Gray, a 2012 World champion and three-time World medalist, was 4-0, and beat a pair of past World champions and a World silver medalist.


Maroulis, a 2012 World silver medalist, finished 3-0.


Host Japan won the World Cup with an 8-0 victory in the finals over Russia. China, last year’s champion, was third with a 6-2 win over Canada. Hungary won a criteria 4-4 decision over Ukraine for seventh place.
