KLIPPAN, Sweden – Four American women earned finals berths at the 2014 Klippan Lady Open on Saturday.
Finalists for Team USA include Victoria Anthony (Huntington Beach, Calif. Sunkist Kids) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., Whitney Conder (Colorado Springs, Colo. U.S. Army) at 53 kg/116.5 lbs., Helen Maroulis (Rockville, Md. Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121.5 lbs. and Randi Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo. U.S. Army) at 69 kg/152 lbs.
At 55 kg/121.5 lbs. American Helen Maroulis opened competition with a decisive 8-3 win over 2013 World silver medalist Sofia Mattsson of Sweden. The win avenged a loss to Mattsson in the quarterfinals of the World Championships last year.
Maroulis then edged out Jillian Gallays of Canada 6-4 in the semifinals setting the stage for a finals bout tomorrow with Tunisia’s Marwa Amri.
2008 Olympic bronze medalist for the United States, Randi Miller has an impressive showing in Sweden on Saturday defeating four opponents including a victory by fall over 2012 World silver medalist Dorothy Yeats of Canada. Miller will face fifth place finisher from the 2013 World Championships Aline Focken of Germany in the gold medal match at 69 kg/152 lbs.
Victoria Anthony will look to cap off an excellent international tournament with a victory over 2012 Olympic silver medalist Mariya Stadnik of Azerbaijan. Anthony posted four wins on her way to the finals at 48 kg/105.5 lbs.
The U.S. will have nine athletes competing in the repechage rounds on Sunday morning looking to earn a spot in the bronze medal round including two-time World bronze medalist Alyssa Lampe (Colorado Springs, Colo. Sunkist Kids) and 2012 Worlc Champion and three time World medalist Adeline Gray (Colorado Springs, Colo. New York AC).
U.S. Head Women’s Freestyle Coach Terry Steiner is encouraged by his team’s performance on day one of senior competition at the Klippan Lady Open.
“We had some good wins but also some tough losses,” Steiner said. “We are learning a lot about what we need to focus on, so we still have a lot of work to do tomorrow.”
2012 Olympian Kelsey Campbell went 1-1 on the day at 58 kg/127.75 lbs. dropping her second match to 2013 World bronze medalist Valeriya Koblova of Russia by second period fall. Campbell will wrestle Scotland’s Chelsea Murphy tomorrow in the repechage.
After taking 2013 off from competition, 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Clarissa Chun (Colorado Springs, Colo. Sunkist Kids) returned to the U.S. lineup in Sweden posting a 1-1 record on the day. Chun lost to Kanae Yamada of Japan 4-6 in the second round of competition.
2013 World Team members Alli Ragan (Carbondale, Ill. New York AC/King University) and Veronica Carlson (Colorado Springs, Colo. New York AC) will wrestle in the repechage rounds tomorrow at 60 kg/132 lbs. and 69 kg/152 lbs. respectively.
In the FILA Cadet division American Sariyah Jones (Modesto, Calif.) lost her second match of the tournament Saturday morning to Russian Veronika Gurskaya 2-6 eliminating her from medal contention.
Competition from Klippan, Sweden will resume at 10:00 a.m. local time/4:00 a.m. EST tomorrow beginning with the repechage rounds. Finals are scheduled to be wrestled at 1:00 p.m. local time/7:00 a.m. EST.
