OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Day one of the 2014 Freestyle Junior National Duals is in the books, with each of the top four seeds winning their respective preliminary pools.
Four-time defending National Champion Illinois boasted a strong day one performance led by past Junior National Champions Elijah Oliver at 120 lbs. and Bryce Brill at 152 lbs.
Illinois defeated a hard-nosed Iowa squad in the Pool A finals 39-23 to advance to tomorrow’s Gold/Silver Pool.
Looking to back up its Greco-Roman championship from yesterday, the talented Michigan squad advanced to the Gold/Silver Pool, but did suffer a loss in the Pool C finals to New Jersey by a 30-24 tally. Michigan rallied from a first day loss to Illinois in the Greco-Roman tournament to win gold, and will look for a quick repeat of history tomorrow.
Greco-Roman runner-up Oklahoma bounced back from yesterday’s loss in the finals, cruising to a first place finish in Pool B. Oklahoma took out Missouri in the Pool B finals 46-20.
Minnesota Blue took the top spot in Pool D, earning a convincing 51-15 win over Utah in the Pool D finals.
Illinois, Minnesota Blue, Missouri and Michigan Blue will compete in the Gold Pool tomorrow for a spot in the National Championship dual. Similarly, Oklahoma, New Jersey, Iowa Blue and Utah will battle it out for supremacy in the Silver Pool.
The winners of the Gold and Silver pools will meet in the championship finals tomorrow night.
Action will resume tomorrow morning from Oklahoma City at 8:30 a.m. CDT, with national title hopes hanging in the balance.
