Alyssa Lampe named 2013 USA Wrestling Women’s Wrestler of the Year

Alyssa Lampe (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) was named 2013 Women's Wrestler of the Year by USA Wrestling. It is the first time in her career that Lampe has received this prestigious award.


Lampe won a bronze medal at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. in Budapest, Hungary in September. She was one of three U.S. women wrestlers to win a bronze medal at the World Championships, helping lead the USA to a third-place team trophy.


It was the second straight year that Lampe has won a World bronze medal. Her first World medal came in 2012, competing up a weight class at 51 kg.


At the World Championships, Lampe opened with a technical fall win over Nirmala Devi of India, 7-0. In the second round, she lost to eventual champion Eri Tosaka of Japan, 0-8. After Tosaka reached the finals, Lampe was drawn into repechage, and rallied with three straight wins. She beat Madalina Linduraru of Romania and Tatyan Amanzhol of Kazakhstan to reach the bronze medal bout, where she pinned Melanie LeSaffre of France in 46 seconds.


Lampe qualified for her third U.S. World Team with a victory at the U.S. World Team Trials in June, defeating Victoria Anthony in the final series in three bouts. Lampe won bout one by pin in 2:54, but Anthony battled back to win bout two 8-10. In the deciding third match, Lampe scored a pin in 4:36.


She also won her second career U.S. Open title in Las Vegas, Nev. in April, defeating Anthony in the finals, 3-0, 5-2. Lampe was named Outstanding Wrestler in the women’s division.


She won a four gold medals at international competitions, winning the Poland Open in Spala, Poland in August, the Olympia 2013 in Olympia, Greece in July, the Grand Prix of Spain in Madrid, Spain in July and the Outstanding Ukrainian Memorial International in Kiev, Ukraine in February.


Lampe also placed third at the 2013 Dave Schultz Memorial International in Colorado Springs, Colo. in February. At the Women’s World Cup in Ulanbattar, Mongolia in March, Lampe had an impressive 3-1 record.


Prior to becoming one of the world’s top Senior wrestlers, Lampe was also a top age-group star, winning bronze medals at the 2007 and 2008 Junior World Championships.


She is aa U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athlete in Colorado Springs, Colo.. Previously, Lampe attended Northern Michigan University, where she was on the USOEC women’s wrestling team.


A native of Tomahawk, Wis., Lampe placed second in the 2006 Wisconsin state high school championships competing against boys.
