Larry Nugent resigns as USA Wrestling Director of Development

Larry Nugent has resigned his position as Director of Development for USA Wrestling, the national governing body for amateur wrestling after over 16 years on the national staff to pursue other career opportunities.
Nugent became Director of Development in February, 2001, managing USA Wrestling’s fundraising program including corporate sponsorship and individual donors. He was also involved in projects including marketing, promotions and brand development.
“For over 16 years, I have had the privilege of serving the world’s oldest and greatest sport at USA Wrestling, and I am very proud of the ventures I helped bring to life. I greatly value the friendships and associations I have made, and I am enthusiastic about pursuing new career opportunities,” said Nugent.
During his tenure, USA Wrestling expanded the number of corporate sponsors, as well as the amount of revenue raised through this program. Current USA Wrestling corporate sponsors include ASICS, Liberty Mutual, MusclePharm, Matguard USA, Cliff Keen Athletic, Maximized Living, Tanita, Blue04, NYU Langone Medical Center and Flips Headphones.
He developed the Drive and Night of Champions fundraising events, where USA Wrestling hosted golf tournaments and receptions and raised substantial revenue for the organization, while promoting the sport in the community where the events were hosted. Under his direction, USA Wrestling also organized VIP hospitality packages for the Olympic Games, which generated substantial revenue.
Another project which Nugent was involved in was the Living the Dream Medal Fund, the successful program which provides bonus funds for USA Wrestling athletes who win World or Olympic medals for the United States.
Early in his tenure at Director of Development, Nugent helped coordinate aspects of the “Wrestling for the Next Millennium” capital campaign, a joint campaign which raised millions of dollars for USA Wrestling, the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum and the National Wrestling Coaches Association.
He first joined USA Wrestling in January 1998 as an Assistant to the Executive Director. Among his projects in that position were handling a USOC grant program to five NCAA conferences which provided support for threatened and emerging sports. He was an on air talent for TV productions on ESPN, Fox Sports and was also an Assistant Producer of USA Wrestling broadcasts.
Prior to joining USA Wrestling, Nugent served as an assistant wrestling coach and faculty instructor at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Nugent was also the head wrestling coach and instructor at Pacific University from 1992-95. Pacific placed in the Top 10 of the National Intercollegiate Athletic Association (NAIA) National Championships for three straight years with Nugent as coach.
As an athlete, Nugent qualified for the Final Olympic Trials in Greco-Roman wrestling in 1980 and the Final Olympic Trials in freestyle wrestling in 1988. He won a silver medal in the 1985 U.S. Olympic Festival. He attended Southern Oregon University, where he received a bachelor's degree in 1986 and a Master's degree in 1994. He was a two-time NAIA All-American wrestler at Southern Oregon, and a member of the 1978 NAIA national champion team.
