SNINA, Slovakia – Last year at the Cadet World Championships Teshya Alo earned a bronze medal, this year she struck gold.

The Honolulu, Hawaii native, Alo won an impressive five matches on the day at 56 kg/123.25 lbs. during her run to gold, including two close one-point victories. She defeated Tatjana Rizhko of Ukraine in the quarterfinals 9-8, followed by a semi-final victory over Kumi Irie of Japan 4-3.

In the gold medal bout it was all Alo. She opened up her offense early against Russian opponent Ksenia Nezgovorova, scoring a takedown in the first 20 seconds of the match. Heading into the second period the score favored Alo 3-2, a lead she would extend to 9-2 by the final whistle, crowning her Cadet World Champion.

“We are all proud and very excited for our world champion, Teshya Alo. She showed a lot of heart and determination,” said U.S. coach Erin Tomeo. “We hope that the girls competing tomorrow can use that as inspiration and to their advantage, in which they'll go hard out of the gate and get the job done.”

Katerina Lobsinger of Concord, Calif. went on a solid run for the U.S. on Thursday, earning fifth place at 65 kg/143.25 lbs. Lobsinger lost her first match to eventual champion Khanum Velieva of Russia 0-10. Once pulled into the repechage round she made the most of her opportunity. Lobsinger booked her spot in the bronze medal bout with a pin over Magdalena Ragginger of Austria. Sweden’s Nellie Brink topped Lobsinger in the bronze medal match 5-0.

2014 Cadet Pan American Champion for the U.S., Hailey Cox of Mapleton, Utah posted a 1-1 record on the day at 43 kg/94.75 lbs. Cox lost a heartbreaking 10-10 bout in the quarterfinals to Lisa Ersel of Germany. Ersel would lose in the semifinals knocking Cox out of medal contention.

Theresa Rankin of Grass Lake, Mich. lost her opening round bout to Alena Sauko of Belarus 2-8 at 49 kg/108 lbs.

“The US turned in a respectable performance today. There were a lot of hard fought battles, unfortunately we came up just short in a few. Our team is extremely excited to see what tomorrow brings,” Tomeo said.

Four more U.S. women have weighed in and received their draws for Friday’s competition. Sariyah Jones (Modesto, Calif.), Gabrielle Garcia (Anaheim, Calif.), Koral Sugiyama (Pocatello, Idaho) and Kendall Reusing (Riverside, Calif.) take center stage tomorrow with aspirations of joining Alo on the medal stand.
