Victoria Anthony strikes gold at Pan American Championships

MEXICO CITY - American Victoria Anthony captured a gold medal in women's freestyle wrestling at the Pan American Championships on Wednesday night.


Anthony, a two-time Junior World champion, won by injury default over World champion Jessica MacDonald of Canada in the finals at 48 kg/105.5 lbs.


MacDonald suffered an apparent shoulder injury just seconds into the match when the wrestlers were on their feet. She was unable to continue.


Anthony placed fifth at the 2013 Senior World Championships.


American wrestlers also captured four bronze medals.


U.S. wrestlers Haley Augello (53 kg/116.5 lbs.), Cheyenne Youngblood (60 kg/132 lbs.), Julia Salata (69 kg/152 lbs.) and Victoria Francis (75 kg/165 lbs.) captured bronze medals on Wednesday.


Augello earned a 10-0 technical fall over Mexico's Coral Jimenez to earn a bronze medal.


Younblood started quickly en route to a 10-0 technical fall over Venezuela's Odalis Kasmel to claim bronze.


Salata downed Mexico's Alejandra Pina 14-3 to earn her bronze medal.


Francis won bronze with a first-period fall over Vaneza Batista of the Dominican Republic.


The U.S. finished second in the team race with 54 points. Canada won the team title with 60 points. Colombia was third with 52 points.


The Pan American Championships freestyle tournament will be held on Thursday.


Olympic gold medalist and two-time World champion Jordan Burroughs is among the U.S. wrestlers scheduled to compete.
