Fearnside, Hendey, Mensah reach University World finals, three Americans go for bronze

PECS, Hungary –All six of the women’s freestyle competing on the third day of the University World Championships have qualified for a medal match.
Competing in the gold-medal finals are Amy Fearnside (Morgan Hill, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) at 53 kg/116.5 lbs., Amanda Hendey (San Gabriel, Calif./Titan Mercury WC/King Univ.) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. and Tamyra Mensah, (Katy, Texas/Wayland Baptist) at 69 kg/152 lbs.
Fearnside, a star at Jamestown University, won her first two bouts to reach the finals, where she will compete against Iulia Leorda of Moldova.
Hendey, a top wrestler for King University, pinned opponents from Poland and Bulgaria. In the finals, she faces former Junior World champion Danielle Lapagge of Canada.
Mensah, a WCWA national champion for Wayland Baptist, scored a technical fall over Germany and a pin over Romania on the way to the finals. She drew 2012 World silver medalist Dorothy Yeats of Canada in the finals.
The three U.S. athletes in bronze-medal bouts are Jacarra Winchester (San Leandro, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) at 58 kg/128 lbs., Brieana Delgado (Fountain Inn. S.C./OKCU Gator RTC) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Julia Salata (Canton, Mich./New York AC) at 75 kg/165 lbs.
Winchester, a star at Missouri Valley College, went 1-1 in the first session, and will face Tetyana Lavrenchuk of Ukraine in a bronze-medal bout. Lavrenchuk was fifth in the 2013 Senior World Championships.
Delgado, who competes for Oklahoma City University, will battle Natsumi Hayami of Japan for a bronze. Hayami was second in the 2012 New York AC International.
Salata, a WCWA national champion for King University, went 1-1 and has drawn Noelia Lalin Canda of Spain in the bronze-medal round. Salata is ranked No. 2 on the U.S. Senior national team.
