Marable wins gold, Burroughs gets bronze at Yasar Dogu in Turkey - results updated!

ISTANBUL, Turkey - Nick Marable (Columbia, Mo./Sunkist Kids/MWF) finished off his greatest day in his international wrestling career by winning a gold medal at 74 kg/163 lbs. at the Yasar Dogu International on Saturday.
Marable edged Morteza Rezae Ghaleh of Iran in the finals, 4-3. Trailing 3-2 in the second period, Marable scored the winning takedown late in the period.
In the quarterfinals, Marable defeated 2012 Olympic champion and two-time World champion Jordan Burroughs (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids/Nebraska RTC). Burroughs led 1-0 after one period, but Marable scored two takedowns in the second period. A Burroughs pushout and late takedown tied the match at 4-4, but Marable won the criteria decision.
The Marable victory snapped Burroughs win streak at 69 matches. Burroughs had won two bouts to reach the quarterfinals in Istanbul. It was Burroughs first loss ever in freestyle wrestling on the Senior level.
In the semifinals, Marable defeated Batuhan Demircin of Turkey in the semifinals, 6-3, to reach the finals, Marable won five matches on the way to the gold.
It was Marable’s second straight international gold medal, after winning a title at the Grand Prix of Paris earlier this month.
“Today we were able to show everyone the depth our team is creating at 74 kg. Nick Marable wrestled a great tournament and you can see he has had some great training and preparation leading up to this event. He was able to control matches and win in all positions,” said U.S. coach Andy Hrovat.
Burroughs was pulled back into the repechage when Marable reached the finals. In his first repechage match, Burroughs scored a 10-0 technical fall over Khabib Batirov of Russia. In the bronze-medal bout, Burroughs stopped Batuhan Demircin of Turkey, 10-2.
“Nick obviously looked great. Coach Henson had him ready to go and he gives America another weapon. He can flat out wrestle. I also loved Jordan's attitude after his match with Nick. He went out and crushed his next two guys. Most of all I liked how they treated each other and set the tone for the rest of our team. They always put the country and their teammates ahead of themselves,” said National Freestyle Coach Zeke Jones.
Earning a spot in a bronze-medal match was Andrew Hochstrasser (Boise, Idaho/Titan Mercury WC), who finished fifth at 57 kg/125.75 lbs. Hochstrasser was defeated in the bronze-medal bout by Sezar Akgul of Turkey, 2-10. Hochstrasser went 4-2 for the day.
“Even though we only had two medals, we are able see trends in the positions we have deficiencies in. If we don't experience the losses now, we may not know what to work on this summer leading up to the world championships. Our goal is to be world champions and we will accomplish this as a team,” said U.S. coach Andy Hrovat.
Two Americans placed eighth: 2013 World Team member Angel Escobedo (Columbus, Ohio/New York AC/Titan Mercury WC/Ohio RTC) at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. and Wynn Michalak (Champaign, Ill./Titan Mercury WC/Illinois RTC) at 97 kg/213 lbs. Escobedo went 2-2 for the day and Michalak was 2-1.
2012 Olympic champion Jake Varner (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) returned at 97 kg/213 lbs. with a 1-1 record. He opened with a victory over Faruk Akkoyun of Turkey. He was defeated in the second round by Riza Yildirim of Turkey, a three-time Junior World medalist and World University silver medalist. Yildirim was defeated in the next round by 2010 World champion and two-time Olympic medalist Khetag Gazumov of Azerbaijan, making Varner not eligible for repechage.
“Today we had a large number of athletes compete in four weight classes. We were able to come away with one gold and a bronze. These events are a great test for the athletes and our national team program. Each individual can see where they are physically and tactically compared to some of the best athletes in the world,” said Hrovat.
National Coach Zeke Jones is looking forward to Sunday.
“This is a darn good tournament and that's why we're here. We're in a fight every match and getting battle tested in every position. We have to fight. Like every time we compete, there's some good things we do and some things we need to do better. I'm glad we got a gold medal but we need more medals. Hochstrasser gained valuable experience. We had a couple of tough breaks with Jake and Angel but we'll get then ironed out. We have another big day tomorrow. Bottom line is we need to take charge of the whistle, score points and then build on our leads. If we do that we'll put ourselves in position to dominate,” said Jones.
Boris Novachkov of Bulgaria, who grew up in California and starred at Cal Poly, placed fifth at 65 kg/143 lbs.
